Ry Cooder has many influences - from the early days as part of Taj Mahal's backing group (Ryland P Cooder, Rhythm Guitar) to the global success of Buena Vista Social Club. This collection pre-dates the latter and post-dates the former - a rather strange bracketing, that has more to do with label allegiance than completeness.
Nontheless, if you know Ryland only as a musical archaeologist, this is a great introduction to his enormous talent. Missing (in my view), are some great songs, such as 634-5789 and Across the Borderline - not to mention the classic Coast of Malabar (with the Chieftains). Still, there's enough here to whet your appetite for more - and it's almost impossible to keep up with his output. He'll have a very comfortable ... Read More:

Superb performances throughout, but the soprano sax at the end of "Come Again" is outstanding. An excellent recording which I would recommend to anyone, either embarking on a Dowland collection or adding to one, as in my case.

If 1,000 Vangelis fans complied their own favourite Vangelis tracks then you would get 1,000 different albums and for a commercial release 'Portraits' includes pretty much what you would expect. Although the brilliance of tracks such as To the Unknown Man, Italian Song and Hymne cannot be denied, the track selection on this album is far too pedestrian to make it a great compilation. It would have been great to see some lesser known Vangelis stuff on here for those people who would probably not buy another Vangelis album and think that all the man is about is Chariots of Fire and Conquest of Paradise. Nothing from Direct, or The City and even the title track from Antartica is cut off in its prime. The albums still remains good, but it was a great chance ... Read More:

I have been a Glass fan for a long time and have mainly bought his major film sound tracks in the past. I first heard his violin concerto on the radio when I was driving. So striking and beautiful was the music, that I had to pull over, close my eyes and just listen. This is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever heard and Gidon Kramer's playing, along with that of the Wiener Philharmoniker is sublime.

Naxos CDs can now more or less offer music from every culture, country, century and composer. This CD is offered for those who need a digitally recorded selection from the rich and varied legacy of Russian folk songs.
Rich and varied as it is, and rich and varied as are the recordings of Russian folk songs in my own collection, I cannot say that this CD offers little more than adequate value for its budget price. The folk songs, as usual, are heard in arrangements for unaccompanied choir. The choir, which has a very modest performing and recording history and a lady director, sing earnestly and with good ensemble, but the effect is hindered by a recording procedure that is more appropriate for a heavy metal group than an a cappella choir. ... It's ironic that one of the world's best known film composers most accomplished works, is not a movie soundtrack. Perhaps the abscence of sweeping visuals to accompany the music may have something to do with some of the negative reviews that this CD has received. To put it bluntly; if "Mythodea" had been the soundtrack for the latest Ridley Scott epic, it would have probably taken an Oscar home.
This is a wonderful, if flawed, work which, while not "classic Vangelis" is most definitely his work. On the downside, this is also "typical Vangelis"; you will find yourself reaching for the 'Skip' button as often as 'Repeat'. When "Mythodea" is good, it's amazing. When it's bad......
Overall though, this is an extremely accomplished work ... Read More:

PHILIP GLASS: Waiting for the Barbarians

I was lucky enough to be at the world premiere of the then latest Philip Glass opera on September 10 2005 in Erfurt in the old East Germany. The atmosphere was electric, there was a twenty minute standing ovation at the end. Taken from the book of the same name by everything-winning author JM Coetzee it tells of a band of state-sponsored thugs sent to a small border town to rid them of the barbarians over the hill. The problem is that the cure is worse than the malady. At this exact time, coincidentally, the excesses at Guantanamo Bay were becoming public. It was all very relevant.
This CD is a live recording of that night. All the cast is good, led by the Magistrate, Richard ... Read More:
