When it comes to Danny Elfman's soundtrack work I am a huge fan. His music can be hauntingly beautiful at time and that's what makes it such wonderful listening. Having seen "Hellboy II - The Golden Army" the other day I decided to get this soundtrack from itunes. At first I wasn't sure what to think but, as the tracks went through my headphones I was struck by how good this really is.

If you listen carefully you can hear echoes from Elfman's "Edward Scissorhands" soundtrack. Both of which have Elfman's signature sounds. His music makes for a very enjoyable and emotional listening experience. He is a genuis of our time and a man I highly respect.

He uses the Ravel's Bolero genre or form so far and so amplified that we reach a totally hypnotic state. With very few notes, with extremely reduced musical phrases, with very few syllables and very short texts he builds many pieces that are rotating and spinning around repetitive nodal points in such an intricate manner that we just dive into them and enjoy the flow and flux, the ebb and reflux of the music. It is one of the problems of writing new vocal music in the more popular sector of the modern classical tradition that a composer has to choose between vocal styles. The choice of style can make this kind of music difficult, in the sense that a listener's reaction may be so subjectively defined by his preferences that he or she cannot see past this to the music itself. This cycle of six songs illustrates this point, with several different voices being involved, with quite a breadth of styles. Perhaps the most notable singer is Linda Ronstadt, whose voice (on two of the six) does the job magnificently. This is pure nectar. I think it is better than KOYAANISQATSI (which I think is brilliant). If you are a fan of the Cello this is for you. The pieces vary from soulful relaxation to head-nodding liveliness. Listening to this album led me to purchase the 'Qatsi' film trilogy. If you have never watched a non-dialogue film with amazing imagery and music try these - it is worth it.

Goldsmith: The Mummy: film score

I'll describe each track in relation to the film, to let people decide for themselves if this CD has what they want. Some passages - namely, the music accompanying the sandwall scene - appear to have been omitted from the CD, but those that are included appear in the same order as their presentation in the film.

"Imhotep" - Begins as the Universal logo comes up at the beginning of the film, morphing into the sun over Thebes; the track underlies the entire Thebes sequence, ending upon Anck-su-namun's death.

"The Sarcophagus" - Begins just as the Book of the Dead takes effect and Anck-su-namun gasps in shock, ends as the camera pans up the giant Anubis statue (before the title hits the screen). The roaring FX at that point aren't included.

This is a truly excptional album. I have been listening to Vangelis for a number of years now but this is without doubt the best thing he has ever done. I bought El Greco when it was commercially released in 1998 and I deliberately don't play it too often in case I get too used to it! It is a distinctly Vangelis album, steeped in joyous melancholy, but more than that, it is an album where Vangelis as composer and not just as innovator comes to the forefront. It is a composers template of how to draft an album; judiciously paced and balanced, with a masterlike grip over the timbre and dynamics. In a world of cheap, throwaway plastic pap, El Greco is an essential work for your collection.

This is a typical Mark Knopfler soundtrack. Some of the tracks have the feel of Local Hero and to a lesser extent, Cal. Other tracks could have fitted very easily onto the Flying to Philadelphia CD. With the storyline of the film being very obviously Scottish, it should not come as too much of a surprise to find tracks influenced by traditional Highland jigs and reels. Mark Knopfler fans should have no hesitation in buying this CD.
