Bottom line up front, this is one of the best John Williams compilations available. It has not only memorable movie soundtrack songs, but also his music from the Olympics. While other John Williams music CDs have lots of songs, this one has some of the best variety compared to others.

Classic Zimmer and some. Listen carefully and you hear strains of The Da Vinci Code and Gladiator filtering through. Not a critisism, it's just his style. You'll also here the influences of other classical composers coming through, not unusual. While parlay is a delightful homage to Morricone's scoring to the classic duel in 'Once Upon a Time in the West'. Makes me smile everytime I hear it, and wish it were longer.

The Best Classical Album in the World...Ever!

I have never been into classical music, however the TV programs Maestro and Last Choir standing (I know trash TV... sorry) made me realise I did like some classical music. So time to test that theory, and of course this CD fitted the bill perfectly, a bit of everything and 99% you will probably know. Good album, maybe I may have discovered culture :-)

The Best Of Jon & Vangelis

Many people wondered what the outcome would be when Polish pianist Vangelis (pronounced Van-jealous) teamed up with Jon Anderson of The Yes.

And the results were much better than expected. Vangelis improvised on the keyboards while Anderson sang random collections of words and the result was quite entertaining.

Their real scoop of the project was managing to tape the late Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney for the song "Friends of Mister Cairo" in what turned out to be the last recorded performance of both actors.

Sadly the partnership ended when Vangelis took a wrong turn on a drive to Andersons house ended up at the home of noted actor and film producer, Lord David Attenborough. From thence Attenborough replaced ... Read More:

Metamorphosis is a masterpiece. All five songs leave you breathless. Would not suit people with prejudices on what classical music has to be. This is purely expressive, sad, and devastating but quiet melodies, where simplicity and minimalism were meant to be.

The reason why this box set is worthwhile is not all the movies represented here have had their soundtracks released on CD. Since Silva Screen's extensive Barry project began, FSM has released 'Born Free', 'Deadfall', 'Aice's Adventures In Wonderland', 'The Appointment', 'King Kong' & 'Monte Walsh' & Intrada has released 'Mary Queen Of Scots. However the original soundtracks for 'Robin & Marian', 'Walkabout', 'The Deep' & 'Raise The Titanic' remain unreleased so until FSM (or someone like them) steps forward, these versions are the only way you or I will hear them. Imporant to note too is that these versions found on this box set are faithfull to the original scores and not Barry's own re-recordings which he made in the 70's for polydor. A decent summary ... This product description is wrong. The track 19 "Still Here" that is listed in the product description does not exist. There are only 18 tracks on this CD. This is identical to the US soundtrack, thus rumors of the two versions being different are false.

This is a typical Rocky soundtrack, with every single track on the entire CD being a butchered remix that sounds nothing like the one that appeared in the movie. Every Rocky soundtrack to date has been like this. The Rocky 4 songs sound terrible as usual. You have dialog mixed into the audio tracks, so you get to listen to Rocky's voice every single time. Cringe-worthy.

When are they going to come out with a Rocky soundtrack that is NOT a "remixed" or "arranged" version?

Since this album first came out well over 25 years ago - I was in Hong Kong at the time and remember buying the cassette in a little record shop in Wanchai - it has always been right at the top of my all-time favourites list, which for me is saying something considering my enjoyment of a number of different genres.
