It is clear from reading other reviews on Amazon and elsewhere that people have mixed feelings about this collection. Some would have an album of entirely new recordings (and maybe more original songs and fewer covers) while others would have preferred an album comprising entirely re-issues. Perhaps it was decided that this compromise would suit everybody. Certainly, I'd been expecting a compilation of Cliff's duet hits ever since the release of his 6-CD boxed set (Singles collection), which contained every British solo single that Cliff had recorded up to that point, but noticeably avoided all the duets. In my review of that collection, I pointed out that there were enough of those duets to occupy a seventh CD. I was therefore a little disappointed ... Read More:

Philip Glass has written some wonderful film scores (Koyaanisqatsi, Mishima, Kundun) but I was absolutely blown away by his score for 'The Hours'. Every single cue is a gem culminating in the final one (track 14) where the music arcs from a slow beginning to a glorious climax where piano chords play against a wash of strings. The music is at once uplifting and melancholic. A masterpiece.

When it comes to Danny Elfman's soundtrack work I am a huge fan. His music can be hauntingly beautiful at time and that's what makes it such wonderful listening. Having seen "Hellboy II - The Golden Army" the other day I decided to get this soundtrack from itunes. At first I wasn't sure what to think but, as the tracks went through my headphones I was struck by how good this really is.
If you listen carefully you can hear echoes from Elfman's "Edward Scissorhands" soundtrack. Both of which have Elfman's signature sounds. His music makes for a very enjoyable and emotional listening experience. He is a genuis of our time and a man I highly respect.
Worth every penny! An absolute must-have for any soundtrack or Danny Elfman fan...

This is the most essential of a list of essential Ry Cooder albums. If you only ever buy one of his CDs, make it this one.
I wore the vinyl out and had to buy it again and then I had to buy the CD. Someone borrowed the CD, they moved and I never got it back so I had to buy it again.
The playing is immaculate, it is simply wonderful music. The Mexican influences are great and really bring an extra dimension. This is the culmination of everything RC did before and overshadows everything he has done since.

Many people wondered what the outcome would be when Polish pianist Vangelis (pronounced Van-jealous) teamed up with Jon Anderson of The Yes.
And the results were much better than expected. Vangelis improvised on the keyboards while Anderson sang random collections of words and the result was quite entertaining.
Their real scoop of the project was managing to tape the late Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney for the song "Friends of Mister Cairo" in what turned out to be the last recorded performance of both actors.
Sadly the partnership ended when Vangelis took a wrong turn on a drive to Andersons house ended up at the home of noted actor and film producer, Lord David Attenborough. From thence Attenborough replaced Anderson on vocals, ... Read More:

A whole CD about water and oceans could be a problem for me, especially at my time of life the wrong side of 47. When I bought this I was in two minds of playing this at so close to bedtime with my Horlicks. As I have not got to the stage of buying incontinent underwear yet. I didn't fancy spending more time in the little boys room, then sitting and relaxing to it. My doubts were unfounded and a dry bed in the morning as well. It is truly a amazing weak bladder friendly experience. No squelchy embarrassingly around. No!
The whole feel of this album is brilliant, hate to say it, but it's like being one with the ocean, man? No feeling of sea sickness either, it is in my top 3 of all time favourite Vangelis albums.

Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's secret service'. However ... Read More:

OK. Let's suppose you like Myleene Klass. Great, you'll probably think - a whole 2 CDs of music performed by Myleene. Wrong! There are only two tracks on which she performs. The love theme from Cinema Paradiso that opens the first CD, and the Satie that opens the second CD. Yes, she is a competent pianist. No, she does not demonstrate real flair on those two recordings.
The rest of the CDs are generally fairly indifferent recordings of popular classical pieces that appear to have been chosen for one of two reasons: either to promote another of EMI's "name" artists or to get some use out of a fairly moribund recording with one or two exceptions - the Prévin conducted tracks for example.
There's nothing bad about "name" artists as another reviewer seems ... Read More:

Well, this soundtrack is good for a quick listen, but for film fans who adore the film it's not going to whet your appetite. The themes are either cut short or present in an edited form, and the majority of the music from the 117 minutes runtime (which was almost constantly underscored) is not on this CD. I would recommend avoiding this purchase if you're looking for a musical experience to match that of the film.
The best solution at this current date is to hunt down the Esper Edition bootleg, released recently (either late 2004 or early 2005 depending on who you believe). This is not the first bootleg of the Blade Runner music - 20 such versions exist, thanks mostly to the untimely release of THIS soundtrack some 12 years post the release of the film itself. Vangelis ... Read More:
