By going back to her roots, singer/songwriter Simpson proves that when it comes to country music she's a better songwriter than singer, but not by much. Eight of the tracks bear the Simpson name under writing credits, and although there are a few good songs, this won't go down as one of her better albums.
The first single is "Come on Over" (co-written by Simpson), a short (less than 3 minutes) country-pop mainstream "driving-along-on-a-Sunday-with-the-radio-on" song, with a decent chorus and all the country trimmings.
The second single is "Remember That", another country-pop song about an abusive relationship where the guy comes begging back after he comes to his senses. The lyrics remind the victim of the physical ... Read More:

'Between Here and Gone' is a song cycle united thematically and musically. These literate meditations on the human condition explore through the lens of ordinary lives, love, loneliness and loss, the passage of time, mortality and the afterlife, the search for meaning and the pull of the road. The songs are beautifully arranged and played. Everything is tasteful, and there's no doubt that the album repays repeated listening. That said, taken as a whole, the album is rather one paced, and would have benefitted from one or two more obvious hooks and stepping up a gear occasionally.

I guess with the purchase of this album I'm finally classed a fan of 'Country' music. Something which would have horrified me a few years ago but started with Ryan Adams and then through Johnny Cash, Gillian Welch and Steve Earle. Before I started along this road this album would not have got much of a listen but I'm glad I did as it's wonderful.
Having seen Chris Knight live you can tell he's the real deal. The story telling here is fantastic and utterly believeable with songs varying between bluesy rockers and much more simpler acoustic numbers. One of the highlights 'Dirt' tells the tale of his grandfathers land being sold off for factories and destroying surrounding land and signs off with a wonderful line of 'They're treating my Grandfathers land ... This isn't a Dylan album. It might seem obvious, but I don't think the previous reviewer realised this fact. It is an album of incredible performances from legendary performers from the last 30 years distilled into a single remarkable evening.
From time to time there are songs that become bigger than their original being. Dylan has produced many of these and they're collected here with renditions from Dylan's contemporaries. If you believe that all music is linked then you must listen to this recording.

How does Willie Nelson keep going: almost 70 and still producing excellent music. Most of the songs on the album will be familiar, and include many old favourites; but there are some surprises, including the Stones "Dead Flowers" featuring Keith Richards and Willie Nelson's and Ryan Adams' version of the reggae classic "The Harder They Come."
Guest artists include Sheryl Crow, Ray Price, Emmylou Harris, Aaron Neville, Rob Thomas and a host of others from a range of genres. The album kicks off with Willie's regular concert opener "Whiskey River", then leads into a selection of songs showcasing both his songwriting and interpretative talents.
This may not be the most essential Willie Nelson album, but it is far better than most of the product that comes out of the Nashville ... Read More:
