Runrig, as a band, have progressed through a career of nigh on 25 years through traditional Gaelic melodies, storming political folk-rock, and heavier mood pieces with lush keyboard sounds and thoroughly modern production. "Searchlight" catches them at the midpoint in their journey. Simplicity is the hallmark of this album (much more so than its rabble-rousing predecessor, "The Cutter and the Clan"), with deeply reflective, spiritual elements in songs such as "Every River" and "Precious Years". The band's social and political consciousness is clear in songs such as "Eirinn" and "Smalltown", but not worn so blatantly on their sleeves as in "The Cutter...". There are hints too ... Read More:

Some very good fiddling and box-playing here and some great singing by Herself. But unlike the brilliant Anglicana, which seems now a deeper and darker record, this one was more of a CD made for a tour and a season of festival gigs, with the arrangements busy with all the band wanting to be in there, playing and singing away. Too often, the result's a bit of a mess, over-dense. As sometimes happens, when everyone's over-playing, there's a loss of energy (and also of feeling). The busy-ness works well on some of the tunes, and best on a really terrific version of the old drinking song, Tom Brown.

I've been a follower of June Tabor's work for scarce a decade now, and it is only after more than one listening (and a careful one at that) that I made up my mind that this is probably her best record to date. Sure, I'm partial to "Ashes & Diamonds", "Aqaba", "Angel Tiger" and "Rosa Mundi". But here her voice is in top form. The tragic ballads of social tragedy and personal tragedy touch a chord deeper than I thought I ever had to be touched in this world or any others. And the melodies, and subtle music arrangements move me each time. If you're in love with music and the human voice - this was meant for you, just for you...

As my review is titled I wasn't sure whether I needed this live recording of the Corrs, considering I had most of the tracks already on other albums.
However after watching a DVD of the Corrs that my friend had, I really enjoyed their cover of "old town" so decided to buy this album.
Now it is easily my fave Corrs cd! The fact it is live adds so much to the music, if you listen hard on Toss the Feathers you can her Andrea taking sharp intakes of breath between penny whistling!
For all the people who think the Corrs are light weight pop stars, listen to this cd and realise they are talented musicians who can play live and have great flexibility.
Altogether it's a great mix of Corrs track and covers which ... Read More:

This is full of songs that you find yourself singing under your breath - 'Ride On', 'Lisdoonvarna', 'Wandering Aongus' - it's the first album I heard by him, and still my favourite.
I first heard Lisdoonvarna on Irish radio, and thought it was an advertising jingle for the Irish tourist board. Then got to 'massage parlours in horse boxes' and thought - what? Mind you, this is the Irish tourist board. But even so, surely not. But then - Ireland. That place where a tramp can waltz (alone, and quite literally) across a major intersection in Dublin through three lights changes and not one driver will as much as beep or edge forward until he's safely onto pavement again. But even so...
One kindly record store later, I was the proud possessor ... Read More:

If you want a great intro to Dylan, this is a pretty good collection. Be aware, however, that one of his finest, spiky, bitter and twisted songs, "Positively 4th Street", ought to be on here (it's on the vinyl) but isn't. It was a single release from 1965, and still gets airplay from the better DJs; if you like the rest of these songs, and you hear "4th Street" on the radio, you'll want to get it too. Sadly you won't find it easily; it's on the later "Essential" compilation, and it's on Biograph, but that's it, CD-wise. So compare the tracklistings carefully before you choose.

Sometimes those strange "other people who bought the Handsome Family, also bought this" links really hit paydirt. It's great coming to a whole new musical genre from nowhere, and there's no knowing history to contend with, and all you have to do is judge the music by the number of times your jaw drops open when you listen to it for the first time. my jaw dropped loads of times. Cocaine Habit. Loved the dodgy intro. My Good Girl. Yep, It's Arlene, but it still takes you by surprise when you realise. New Virginia Creeper. Surely that's Lee, at work, at work. Let It Alone. Sod those PC attitudes. God's Got It. Whoo! These Alabama boys sure know irony. Don't Ride That Horse - I've played it more than any other track. Utterly haunting. Bobcat Tracks. A joyous laugh from start to finish. ... Read More:
