This is really, really bad. I know there is a fashion for playing 18th Century music as if everyone is running to catch the trains that will be crossing England in the 19th. There is little evidence for this idea and in the case of this collection of songs it is clearly wrong.
The cover notes tell of the hymns as being seen by their creators and by John Wesley as teaching tools. They are rich in biblical and theological imagery which is meant to be thought about as they are sung. I almost pity Maddy Prior as she races through these . She sings without inflection and without any sense of meaning as the songs whizz by.
You can do better, which makes this even more disappointing. You get half a star for choosing good hymns.

This is the only Welch album I've heard, so I can't comment on the comparisons of other reviewers. For me, though, this is a fine album, simple in both song and arrangement. Darker moments, such as 'One Monkey', produce the same effect as some of Neil Young's more sober moods. Lighter ones, such as 'One Little Song', while acceptable, feature lyrics that are almost too simple. Welch, though, is generally quite deadpan in her delivery, yet her recordings seem to hang so many questions in the air. This is one of those country albums that you don't think of as being country after a while, the music is that effective, and so you don't have to like the genre to enjoy it.

I don't honestly think i've heard a better live acoustic album than this one. Everything is exactly where it should be. The fragile but expressive voice. The emotionally charged melodies and subject matter. The supremely accomplished, but subtle accompaniment of the Blue Moon Orchestra. Hell, even the one bum note she hits in 'wing and the wheel' just adds to the emotional honesty of this performance. Amongst her best albums, and probably the finest recorded live performance i've ever heard committed to compact disc.

I bought 'Hello Starling', the first Josh Ritter album I ever listened to, because of a recommendation from a very enthusiastic friend and, after playing this astonishing album once, promptly ordered every single album Josh has ever released. Yes, it really is that good. It is a classic, often glorious-sounding folk/rock masterpiece which has echoes of Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Bruce Springsteen and yet remains firmly and unmistakably the distinctive work of Josh Ritter. I'm not even sure when he's at his best - whether it is when he's picking on his acoustic guitar on the gorgeous opener 'Bright Smile', the beautiful 'Wings' and the Dylanesque 'You Don't Make It Easy Babe' or when he's cutting loose on songs such as the organ drenched 'Man Burning' ... American Tune

I really like CD's that every time you play them something new reaches out and grabs you. American Tune is such an Album.

It's my belief that Eva only recorded a track if she felt that she could do it justice, put her stamp on it and bring a fresh interpretation to the original composition.

Most of the recordings on this CD were made in one take and have only recently been discovered. They all show her talent and that of Keith Grimes and Chris Biondo.

Forget the artificially produced unpluggeded version that other Artists put out this is UNPLUGGED in it's true and natural state.

A couple of the tracks like True Colours and Yesterday you will enjoy straight off because of their familiarity BUT the beauty of this ... Read More:
