I've waited a long time for the boys new album. Being a rum drinking, bodhran playing bloke I was hoping for some upbeat drinking songs. Unfortunately with "Fortune's Favour" great Big Sea have gone for an album that harks back to 2004's "Something Beautiful". It's a good, solid album full of lovely songs for the girls, but lacking in some oomph! Track 2 "Walk on the Moon" is probably the best romantic number on the album and gets a steady 4* in my iTunes. "England" is a nice traditional sailing song. The best track is "Oh Yeah" which is very modern with some great electric guitar. The only decent drinking song is track 9 "Company of Fools" which is as usual about gettimg rammed and chasing girls down George Street. A great sing along chorus ... Read More:

The remastering of this album (&/or the original BBC recording) leaves much to be desired, especially on the tracks 'You never wanted me' and 'Fotheringay' .. unless I just have a duff CD of course.
And the material is not of the highest quality comapred to their studio albums of the same period. And you may have many of the tracks (or very similar versions) as bonus tracks on their other re-issued CDs ('Fairport Convention', 'What We Did on Our Holidays', etc. .. all of which are superior).
Yes, it's a 'must have' for the avid Fairport/Sandy Denny fan, but for anyone who just wants a smattering of Fairport, it definitely is nowhere near the top of the list. Actually it's probably near the bottom.

They say men read women's magazines to find out what they are really thinking. "History" performs the same function the other way round. Here we are in all our doubt and vulnerability. Occasionally brash or sarcastic but mostly hiding our uncertainties.
This is the first LWIII album I bought and is my favourit, with "Men", if you hadn't guessed, my favouite track.

Loreena McKennit is a very skilful musician and she combines simple themes with complex arragements. The music is traditional-celtic-folk style with a new-age twist. The musicians who perform on this CD are to a very high standard and the mixing is done well so that all instruments can be heard properly. A great deal of work has gone into producing this album, as has been done with Loreena's later work. The pieces are all very different, though "Bonny Swans" does get rather tedious and there's a tendency to fast-forward to the next track after one minute of it. However, if you like traditional celtic folk music, you're sure to enjoy this one.

Another collection of Paxton's music described him as a 'troubador'. This wonderful re-release of two his earliest albums makes that point more forcefully than anything else I can think of.
Here are some of Tom's finest songs - from the gentle humour of 'Goin' to the zoo' and 'What did you learn in school today', to the honest romanticism of 'My lady's a wild flying dove'. But the true strength of this early music lies in Tom's songs about social justice (or, more accurately, social-injustice) and life in America in the 60's.
Take, for example, the brutal power of his lyrics in 'Goodman, Schwerner and Chaney', a song which recounts the ghastly murder of a ... Read More:

Great album.
Got it today and it's now on the third spin.
Great songs, great lyrics, great musicianship, great sound.
This may be the best of Ritter's albums so far, even for those who fell for any of the previous albums (like me) and expected never to hear anything as good as the songs "You've got the moon", "Kathleen" or "Bone song".
Well, he's done it.
Every song in this album is better than the previous one, every lyric is clear as crystal and the previous albums, though great in their own, are a step below this one.
"Right Moves", "Temptation of Adam", "Waiting for love"... well, 14 awesome songs, great production and Josh Ritter with amazing musicians, sounds and songs.

I think this works ok as background music; it's wistful, easy, charming. However, I don't think it stands up to actually LISTENING to because it feels quite one-dimensional, twee and a little calculated in its charm. The American accent really put me off. Why why why? This could have been much better if it felt a bit more honest.

I got this on LP when it first came out. There was a single, "Heartsong," which actually got some airplay. I fell in love with it straight away. The music is quite simply exquisite...and all the adjectives in the summary. "Heartsong" itself just rocks. You could be depressed with this album on...but only if you had your fingers in your ears. Giltrap is a great guitarist, and the other musicians on this album are similarly gifted. You won't regret buying this. I never have.
