I first heard this album in Nov 1960 in my first week at RAF Akrotiri Cyprus. I was straight out of training and posted overseas, knowing no one and feeling at a loss. One old hand was playing the album and I could hear the music and as the music continued I could relate to the different tracts and their feeling. To me they expressed the way I felt at that time-excitement at being overseas for the first time, loneliness knowing no one and a sence of adventure looking forward to the begining of a new phase of my life. Since then I have tried to find a copy of Oberlin without success, until now. To me, 'Jazz at Oberlin' was the beginning of a new experience in music which reflected the beginnings of my life's new experience.

Smack Up [Us Import]

I wonder if Art is having a laugh with us all about the album title "Smack-up" because most jazz fans know what Pepper became famous for as well as playing the Saxaphone ?
That aside,this album sees Pepper in prime form showing shades of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean in his phrasing and tone.
The title track is the pick of the bunch which is a lively up-tempo swinger that really showcases the altoists talents.
He is accompanied by Jack Sheldon who plays no more than an adequate trumpet in the style of a lot of the West coast musicians of the day.Pete Jolly contributes some nicely swinging solos on piano but the show here belongs to Pepper.
Quality stuff.

probably his best live recording ever! check out his trumpet solo on my funny valentine. the concert was originally avaliable on two separate records:memories &four. if you like chets fragile later work then this is a must have you will not be disappointed.

Originally recorded in 1959 and re-released in 1992, this landmark CD features all new arrangements developed during in an intense three days of rehearsal before this live performance. Shearing was relatively new to the US and its audiences, but Lee became a fan the minute she heard him and was thrilled to make an album with him. A saloon-singer/composer/jazz artist, and always a professional, she was known for her attention to the smallest detail, not a trait that lends itself naturally to albums recorded "live," but with Shearing at the keyboard and his quintet in the background, Lee sounds relaxed, swingy, and light-hearted here.

Neither Bill or Stan were happy with these recordings but finally approved their release. Elvin certainly deserves a mention on the cover as he makes a substantial contribution.
