This disc was quite a surprise. It was bought on a whim when I was looking for something to play in the car - yet this disc rewards a lot of careful listening.
For anyone interested in jazz of the 1960's and 70's, Chet Baker is (or should be) a familiar name. His trumpet style and originality deserve more attention.
The tracks seem to cover a wide part of his career. From 1963 and his appearance with Miles Davies to the end in Amsterdam in 1975, just 12 years later, this disc covers it.
Chet plays classics such as "So What" and "Milestones" with great musicality. The other tracks also reveal a great talent. There isn't a dull track.
So enough about the artist, why has this compilation disc ... Read More:

I went to the Brubeck's 85'th birthday concert with the LSO, and it was *so* good that I promptly bought this recording of the 80th birthday concert. I am very glad I did! To my mind only Chorale doesn't quite work - the rest is a joy to the ears, and I listen again and again (and then again, for good measure). Militello's sax sound is harsher than Desmond's was, but he is a great musician - just check out his solo on Take Five if you still need a proof, and his flute on Brandenburg gate is simply excellent. As for the rest, it's Dave himself, of course, plus Darius, Chris, Matthew and Dan Brubeck, plus Alec Dankworth, plus the mighty LSO conducted by Russell Gloyd -- all enjoying themselves. Do I need to say more? Some of Dan's drumming in particular ... Read More:

The first Evans-Hall duo album, Undercurrent, was too good to be a one-off and so a few years later they made this follow-up. Whether it’s as good as Undercurrent is a matter of opinion. Both artists are in good form, which is recommendation enough. However, there’s a degree less warmth and depth in the recording than on Undercurrent and it may be this that makes the playing on Intermodulation seem a bit more detached and cerebral. There are good things here, though. I like the oblique approach to ” I Get a Kick out of You”, which begins with a nicely shaped improvised chorus from Hall on the familiar chord sequence and only states the tune directly at the end. Both artists seem to play with more relaxation and assurance at ... Read More:

This Cd contains a wealth of Shearing magic. If you want to chill out or just wantsome real "Dinner Jazz" for that special meal, then this is it!
Listen to "Laura" or "There's a Small Hotel" they are superb.
The Billy May arrangements contribute greatly and George Shearing's own are subtle.
