I first discovered Marty Paich backing Mel Torme with a medium sized group, his arrangements really impressed me and now he is one of my favourite arrangers. Get him to lead some of the top West Coast jazz men at their peak in 1959, playing well known standards and you have the right mix for a great album. His arrangements are pure magic, recognisable as the tune but with adequate space for some wonderful solos. The liner gives all the soloists for each track and provides some useful historical information. Sadly the recording engineers remains anonymous. If you like sweet swing this should really be in your collection.
