This CD should be referenced onto a sister recording by Stan Getz: Jazz Samba (the original work). Basically, this recording is more of the same - but better in my opinion.
There is still the excellent rich Sax work of Getz and the great Guitar work of Bonfa. Also included this time are some equally impressive Latin American vocals on some tracks. Note that the vocalist is probably not Astrid Gilberto.
I liked this CD for the warmth of the bass and the utter smoothness of the Sax. The guitar work is good too.
The vocal tracks make a change from the totally instrumental Jazz Samba recording, breaking up the recording.
On a technical note there is minimal production content( as recorded circa ... Read More:

I was put on to this record by Hans Peters, a Detroit audiophile who recommended it highly. I was not misled. This CD exemplifies the cool West Coast scene but in a European context. There are shades of Curthis Counce's trumpet player Jack Sheldon as the tracks bring back those memories of the Barclay Sessions. One of the best periods of Baker's recording career, highly recommended.

There is a purpose for space, it allows us to view what is not otherwise apparent and when the musical equivalent of reading between the lines is applyed to this recording one is offered a multitude of reflections. Chet Baker was well known for being sparing with muscal statements, but on this collection of recordings he goes one step further, almost implying more than what is actually said. Like a good book, it sets the scene perfectly but allows enough room for the listener (or reader) to enjoy a little creativity of their own. David Wheat builds hauntingly subtle chordal webs upon Ross Savakus' delicate bass framework, allowing Chet to take each tune breath takingly close to colapsing.

When Mel Torme and George Shearing, friends who recorded together often, performed at the Paul Masson Mountain Winery in 1987, each was at his peak. Torme was then sixty-two years old, but his voice had never been better--he never smoked (unusual in this industry), and his voice was mellow and mature, even better at sixty-two than it was at thirty-two. Shearing, at age sixty-eight, having signed with Concord Records in 1979, was enjoying a renaissance as a jazz pianist, making stunning recordings with Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, and Mel Torme, among others.
In this vibrant live performance, both Torme and Shearing are relaxed, more interested in communicating with the audience and each other than in special effects and pyrotechnics. ... Read More:

Pretty much all that needs be said about this timeless collection of music has already been said. Now, it's for the playing. Wonderful accompaniment, of course, to the creation of Charles Schulz' "A Charlie Brown Christmas" tv special, this recording also shines on its own. From the first note on the album, the Vince Guaraldi Trio bring to life the joy and wonder of Christmastime. Fun for all ages - and the ages.

This is small group jazz at its very best. After casting off the restraints of the bossa nova years and dabblings in popish fusion stuff, hear Getz doing what he does best - playing gorgeous tenor with some great sidemen. Stan really stretches out here - including a fast 'What Is This Thing Called Love'- but even though it was one of his last recordings, not much of the butter seems to have run out of his tone. He sounds irristable on the opening 'El Cahon' and all throughout the CD he weaves long flowing lines through and around the chords - a masterly show of phrasing. Mention should also be made of Kenny Barron and the rhythm section. They accompany Stan perfectly, diggin in or mellowing out accordingly. Barron further proves himself to ... Read More:

I remember picking up this album during the Edinburgh festival aroung 1986 and being mightily impressed as to how the legendary arranger Gil Evans had crafted these Jimi Hendrix compositions into credible jazz vehicles. Studded with stars such as John Abercrombie, Howard Johnson (wailing in the upper register of his tuba on "Voodo Chile")and David Sanborn this seemed an obvious development rather than the controversial effort described within the album cover. Having re-visited this recently, although enjoyable it is far from Evan's best effort and whilst I would tend to agree with most fans that his best work was produced in the 1950's and 60's, fans of the electric period would do better by seeking out the excellent "Priestess".
