Elite Hotel was the follow up to Emmylou's magnificent Pieces Of The Sky. The tuneful material includes both achingly beautiful ballads and fast country rock. The album kicks off with the uptempo Amarillo full of twang, and is followed by the sensitive weepie Together Again which was her first number one country single in 1976.
The slow songs encompass a variety of styles: Sin City a gentle ballad with lovely male harmonising; One Of These Days, a number 3 hit on the country charts, is a lilting mid tempo ballad, whilst Till I Gain Control Again showcases Emmylou's interpretative skills to their best on his sensitive and evocative love song.
Lennon/McCartney's Here, There And Everywhere receive a subdued, mellow treatment, ... Read More:

I find it sad that so few people know Beth's music so I tell people about this and always have it in the car. Her voice matches her melodies, and the production is usually understated which makes it all the more pleasant. If you don't recognise any songs here, do give it a chance because you'll be glad you did!

'washington square serenade' represents change on all fronts for Earle. There's a change in mood from the last few intensely political releases. This is a more personal album, reflecting his own life, a move to the big city, married life, more settled, more satisfied. Yet Earle has always been a liberal artist favoured by urban americana fans, rather than heartlands country. Musically there are changes too: electronic beats, world music. From Steve Earle, Mister Organic, Mister American Roots. Who'd have thought? Yet this too reflects Earle's move to New York, as kick off song 'Tennessee Blues' waves "Goodbye Guitar Town", in 'Down Here Below' a NY celebrity hawk whose position at the top of the food chain serves as a metaphor for the city's lords of the universe, ... I saw this artist on "Later" earlier this year and despite knowing nothing about her at all prior to this I was completely captivated by her performance and the songs she played. I ordered this CD the next day. Sometimes albums bought under such circumstances can be a disappointment but this certainly wasn't one of them, if anything it has surpassed my expectations.
Musically there are touches of Appalachian folk, jazz and blues but all done in a style that is very much her own. If I had to make comparisons I might say it reminds me of the first two Kate and Anna McGarrigle albums(but with sweeter melodies)with a touch of The Roches thrown in. The most interesting thing is that it doesn't fit easily into any particular genre or style but, in this case ... Read More:

This isn't Dylan it's some sort of country and western type bod who sounds really quite affected. A shame really because if Dylan had sung these songs they would have been really quite good. Still it's better than most things out there especially more recent stuff; have you heard the rubbish people fill their ears with these days? It's no wonder everyone's miserable.

Introducing us to their rhythmic and melodious country/rock style, and their infectiously candid and assertive manner that would later get them rather unfairly into political hot water, the feisty Dallas trio's first mainstream album is a fantastic example of country music that has been made accessible to a wider audience.
The Chicks are entertaining, they sound as if they really had a lot of fun making this album, and their performances are full of spirit and energy - they're a joy to listen to. The album also has heart and soul, there's a lot of humanity in the lyrics which might not be immediately obvious to the casual listener.
However, I did feel that they were holding something back on these recordings, there was even more life they could ... Read More:

"Sundirtwater" is the fifth album from The Waifs, a folk-rock band from Western Australia. Their resume is fairly impressive, with their double-platinum fourth album "Up All Night", and a tour with Bob Dylan both in Australia and North America. "Sundirtwater" is a fine addition to their discography as well, with a title track which has a jazzy groove which is as addictive as anything I have heard recently. There are also a dozen other tracks which may not have the same initial draw as "Sundirtwater", but all of which hold their own with repeated listening.
This is not a group trying to repeat their past successes, but one which is exploring their musical limits. Undoubtedly they will not shed the "Folk-Rock" label with this album, but the styles go far beyond ... Read More:

The warmth of KD Lang's voice combines with skilled musicians and first division songwriters to create one of the best albums you'll ever hear.

Based on the strength of reviews on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com I decided to give this album a try. Whilst there is no denying that there are some excellent tracks on it, my favourite probably being the subtle 'Lucky You', the album as a whole lacks cohesion and seems like it's trying to appeal to too many people. And though the album has this 'Sad Songs...' theme trying to tie all the tracks together, to be honest it's not even that bleak to listen to!
'Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers' does highlight the versatility of Matt Berninger's voice, and it also does have to be said that the album has a refreshing originality to it. Still, for me, it's too much of a mixed bag to wholeheartedly recommend.
