For those of you who haven't heard the story, after the success of the single Heart of Gold from the hugely popular Harvest album, Young famously said "the song put me in the middle of the road, which became a bore so I headed for the ditch".
To prove the point he made three albums that contained none of the mainstream appeal of Harvest. On the Beach was the last of the three ditch albums recorded, but was second released, mainly because the record company deemed Tonight's the Night too chaotic, and it was temporarily shelved.
History lesson over, let's talk about this record. Not only is it the best album Neil ever made, it is also the best album I have ever owned. I came to the table via the oft travelled Harvest/Goldrush ... Read More:

I've never really bothered with live albums in the past, always finding them a poor substitute of actually being there. This album changed my mind...
Release Date February 10, 2003
Calexico's sound inhabits the frontier badlands of the American Southwest, a cinematic multi-instumental brew that takes in jazz, alt-country, Mariachi, folk and electronics. It's a widescreen affair, a mixture of traditional rootsy Americana ('Quattro') and brooding instrumental mood pieces ('Pepita', 'Across The Wire') that evoke rust and dust choked border towns. Dubbed 'desert-rock' by some, don't be turned off by the Tex-Mex conceit, this is a wonderful album overflowing with ideas; a real grower that rewards repeated listens.
The filmic quality to the music is enhanced by anecdotal and scene-setting lyrics, not to mention Enio Morricone-schooled atmospherics. But they can do breezy west coast pop as well ('Not Even Stevie Nicks') and desert trip-hop: 'Black ... Read More:

This is an excellent primer into the career of a country artist whose limited sales invite the description of 'cult artist'. The reason for that status/ categorisation can be heard on bleak, beguiling songs like 'Kathleen' and 'Waiting Around To Die' where Townes Van Zandt's mournful lyrics, sad, sonorous vocals and sparse musical accompaniment sound like a painful, plaintive cry from the heart. Legend: the Best Of Townes Van Zandt is a poignant reminder that country music is much more than line dancing, Dolly Parton and reactionary attitudes.

Mark Chesnutt has one of the best voices in country music. With this, his most recent album, he stays close to his neo-traditional roots. There are lots of great tracks on this CD, all with excellent melodies and engrossing lyrics - and all, of course, delivered with expert finesse by an talented artist. Many of the tracks are slow and mid-tempo, perhaps the best examples being the lead single "When You Love Her Like Crazy" and the cover of Charlie Rich's 1977 hit "Rollin' With the Flow". Other stand-out tracks include the funny honky tonkin' "Come On In (The Whiskey's Fine)", "Woman", the poignant "Man in the Mirror", the light jazz of "When I Get This Close to You" and the closer, "She Never Got Me Over You". "Rollin' with the Flow" is an appropriate title as this collection makes ... Read More:

This is a great opportunity to gather some of the best songs by Waylon Jennings, one of the great "gurus" of country-western. His voice is warm, his music is cool and he is the singer of the lost cowboys! The only problem with this collection is that... it is a collection, thus lacking the spirit gathered in a full album, but if you don't know him, you should get this! Great tunes such as "You asked me to" or the mythical theme from "Dukes of Hazzard" are gathered in here. Excellent for driving, excellent for relaxing!

Nice picture of a bloke who has reached 3 score and 10. Every song brings so many memories back over 40 years. This man's voice is better than fine wine, rich, smooth like velvert. Beautiful - how can his voice possibly get better year on year? Just listen to each song, listen to the high notes, how can he hold them for so long. Wonderful 2 CD set. I look forward to seeing him on his UK Tour in October/November 2007. Just wonderful.

Having purchased this item myself and with two 'Universal Players' capable of playing surround DVD-Audio (and SACD), I can confirm that unfortunately this item is just DTS Surround and does NOT contain DVD-Audio. I say this because a DVD-Audio option does not appear when the disc is loaded into a DVD-Audio player, nor is there any mention of DVD-Audio in the accompanying packaging with the disc. A shame, because the Surround Sound is good even with DTS (but is likely to have been even better with the higher bit and sampling rate of DVD-Audio). Therefore just 3 stars, because the sound won't be any better than the DVD (with DTS), which also includes the video of the concert.

Better known as a songwriter, Guy's always-brilliant albums never sold in big quantities. Maybe Guy's voice didn't appeal to mainstream country radio, or maybe his lake of stage presence when performing live counted against him. Although he never became a major star, Guy built up a significant fan base in Britain and America. More significantly, other singers appreciated the quality of his songs and have recorded many of them as well as lending their support on Guy's own recordings. Thus, even if you've never heard any of Guy's own music, you may well have heard some of his songs. This twofer contains Guy's two albums for RCA - the first two albums of his career.
Guy's debut album (Old No 1) occupies the first ten tracks here and is generally regarded as the best album of his ... Read More:
