The Very Best Of Grateful Dead

While shaving I noticed a few more grey hairs, so I started singing 'Touch of Grey'. I saw this CD on here so splased out. This is fantastic, joyful music, also the musicianship isn't half bad as well. So my advice - skip the hair dye, buy this CD it will make you feel much better in the long run.

I have to thank Sid Smith in his Postcards From A Yellow Room blog, for pointing me in this direction. At the end of December, Sid reviewed his favourite albums released in 2007, and included Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape album. On the strength of Sid's earlier review I bought the CD and can report it is my favourite non-prog, non-jazz whatever, recording of 2007.

Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape has languished, apparently forgotten, in the can for nearly 40 years but thanks goodness it has been discovered, remastered and now available for purchase. So with hearing this for the first time and hindsight, I find this album reinforces three things in the late 60's (with Stills being between Buffalo Springfield and CSN),

A terrific follow-up to "Greatest Hits Vol. I", this collection is a must for Jackson fans; it of course has his mega-hit with Jimmy Buffett, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere", and there's a good balance between the up-tempo songs and the ballads. The musicianship is outstanding, including the masterful mandolin and fiddle work by Stuart Duncan, and piano by Hargus "Pig" Robbins.

The songs:
"I'll Go On Loving You" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Written by Kieran Kane (once of the short-lived but brilliant duo The O'Kanes in the late '80s), the words and melody are superb, and Alan sings it with the tender soul of a poet.
"The Blues Man" is so lovely, so mellow; written by Hank Williams Jr., it has a simplicity that goes right ... Read More:

Old Number One/Texas Cookin'

Among roughly two dozen CDs recently ordered, that are taking me more and more to the roots and outer reaches of country music, this one really sticks out most. It's two original albums packed onto one disk. Just having the first would well be worth the money. It's a debut of such monumental quality it really amazes, that it's gotten so little attention, especially because I really think it does get you hooked on the very first listening. Texas Cooking doesn't fully keep up, especially because the clarity of Guy's voice gets very slightly muddled in the production and it's not as distinctly Texan. The storytelling is on par with the stuff Johnny Cash put into the American Recordings, only its all Guy Clark original songs. A must buy for the lonely island. 6 stars.

Whether its commercially successful or commercial suicide no one can deny the talent of Ryan Adams. I've seen him at his best around the time of `Heartbreaker', `Gold' and his worst at the gig the day before he fell off the stage in Liverpool and broke his arm and his pissing about to piss of the record company `Rock N Roll' and just recently his reinvigoration with his band The Cardinals which continues where last album Cold Roses left off. Here where Ryan puts the name of the band first before his own you do get a sense of collaboration rather than ego and a sense that the songs wouldn't be as good if all weren't pulling their weight equally, with that said this then is his most accessible songs in ages. this is probably the deads best studio album, i personally prefer them live, but this is fantastic.
6 of the 10 songs are top class and the other 4 are good too.
uplifting, blissful, soulful and lifts my spirit.
