My exploration of pre-Eagles country rock was bound to lead me to this CD given the previous reviews. It may be as relevant to music history as everybody says but it probably won't get much repeat play from me. It's burdened with a persistent melancholy that I find too much in contrast to the fun that country rock should be. On the 6 star "The Gilded Palace of Sin" Gram Parsons and his Burrito collaborators sing of dead hippies and burning rain but with a touch of irony and a soulful attitude. To make things worse, the better of the two albums contained here is interspersed with some singles sides that really could have been relegated to the back. For 1969 the Fantastic Expedition is a brilliant production with excellent instrumental work, no ... Read More:

I've had this album since it was first released. I would say that it has got to be one of the dozen or so essential albums in any popular music lovers collection, and in this expanded version is a must buy. My fellow reviewers have given you the details, I just advise you to do yourselves a big favour & add this to your collection, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Townes Van Zandt has a lot of CDs available and not all of them are good. Be careful what you buy. Check out the reviews and track listings on Amazon first. In my opinion there are too many later CDs which are just repacked old songs with little or no new material. I love his music but I am not prepared to pay full album price for one or two songs. Therefore I was unsure where to start with his back catalogue then I found this boxset.
The box set is amazing value. You get Townes first 7 albums (and arguabley his best) plus a live CD for £14. All of these CDs contain Townes songwriting at its most prolific and his best. The first CD contains his first two albums and is possibly the weakest (but by no means weak) of the set. This is because of his ... Read More:

In the UK only Stage Fright was a chart album and it was not much more in the States with Rock of Ages added later.Hit singles were only minor in comparison to say Bob Dylan's.
As I'm not much of a rock fan-if that's supposed to mean heavy metal or hard rock-I see the Band as closer to country music and certainly to Americana which is just an extension to Roots music.
I don't pretend to understand rock critic language-which basically praises the first Band albums then claims to be disappointed with what followed when its really all the same thing-staying in the same turf.
The Band were in the right place at the right time on at least 2 occasions-Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan. With the latter they were a typically noisy rock'n'roll band who cut a ... Read More:

The 70's was a decade of excellent music, where creativity was at it's peak and for alot of groups good songwriting was at the forefront.
The quality of this group astounds me. The reason I went for this album is because the title track is catchy, but meaningful. My other favourites are Hollywood Waltz (superb lyrics, that really sums up some people), Lyin' Eyes (A superb classic), Visions (great rock song) and After the Thrill is Gone (a beautiful, apt song that instantly struck a chord with me). The whole group write, sing and play such fantastic songs and they all possess decent singing voices.
Unlike some groups the Eagles sing with feeling and you can tell they mean what they sing. It's no wonder Lyin' Eyes won an award "The ... Read More:

I Gotta tell You It Is A Good album For True Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, And Timothy B Smihdt Fans.
The Eagles Have Changed Their Style But Still are One Of The Greatest Country/Southern Rock Artists To me In The World Today.
all of the songs on this album are amazingly done and performed very well.
it is well worth the buy for true eagles fans
and i love all the old music they wrote but times change!

An exellent compilation of the Outlaws' first five albums. These were the band's best albums in any case. Never quite able to equal their first superb eponymous debut album, the Outlaws still showed that they were unequalled for quality Country Rock in their heyday.
If you do like this material, I also recommend The Allman Brothers compilations and also get Molly Hatchet's Greatest Hits.

While shaving I noticed a few more grey hairs, so I started singing 'Touch of Grey'. I saw this CD on here so splased out. This is fantastic, joyful music, also the musicianship isn't half bad as well. So my advice - skip the hair dye, buy this CD it will make you feel much better in the long run.

I have to thank Sid Smith in his Postcards From A Yellow Room blog, for pointing me in this direction. At the end of December, Sid reviewed his favourite albums released in 2007, and included Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape album. On the strength of Sid's earlier review I bought the CD and can report it is my favourite non-prog, non-jazz whatever, recording of 2007.
Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape has languished, apparently forgotten, in the can for nearly 40 years but thanks goodness it has been discovered, remastered and now available for purchase. So with hearing this for the first time and hindsight, I find this album reinforces three things in the late 60's (with Stills being between Buffalo Springfield and CSN),
a) Steve Stills was at a creative height,
b) Steve ... Read More:
