Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968 [VINYL]

by: Various Artists

Release Date October 30, 2006
What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.

The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.

Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play ... Read More:

Into the Purple Valley

CD-Charts > Music > Country Rock
by: Ry Cooder

Release Date January 25, 1988
This was Ry Cooder's third solo record and while the first two contain a number of great tracks, demonstrating his great skill on guitar and mandolin, with "Into the purple valley" he really got into his stride, turning out a well-balanced record with a great variety of styles and sounds but a unifying aesthetic.

There is a real Woody Guthrie feel to "How Can You Keep On Moving (Unless You Migrate Too)" and "Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All", as well as Guthrie's own "Vigilante Man", which Ry would often revisit in the future. He also applies the same kind of dustbowl sound to Leadbelly's "On a monday" and Johnny Cash's "Hey porter". The Drifter's "Money Honey" has a similar feel but more electric and this electric R&B feel carries ... Read More:

by: Drive By Truckers

Release Date August 28, 2006

This one of those albums that creeps up on you and catches you unawares. On the first listening you think, well, that was all right. But pretty soon you're thinking it's as good as anything DBT have done. And on each subsequent listening there's something new, something you didn't notice before because there's so much other stuff going on.

That's the way it went down for me, anyway.

Stylistically DBT never deliver the same package twice running. Take two adjacent songs - Marry Me and My Sweet Annette. Both matrimonially themed, the former could have been written by The Faces and performed by The Stones. It sounds like something omitted from Forty Licks, the Stones' greatest hits package, but only because in a moment ... Read More:

Enjoy the Ride

CD-Charts > Music > Country Rock
by: Sugarland

Release Date November 06, 2006
Enjoy The Ride is the follow up to their successful debut Twice The Speed Of Life and they've gotten even better!
They changed producers for this album and it shows. They also started to produce hits in country radio, such as the excellent uptempo Settlin',Everyday America and their 2 big no.1 hit ballads Want To and Stay.Stay also won them Song Of The Year,Jennifer really gets to show off her voice on this acoustic ballad.
Other greats are the easy listening ballads These Are The Days,April Showers and Sugarland. There's also the cracking uptempo Mean Girls which features the amazing Brad Paisley playing a fantastic electric guitar riff!
All in all a fine Pop/Country album that has now made them big stars in country music. You'll easily enjoy the ... Read More:

Hasten Down the Wind

CD-Charts > Music > Country Rock
by: Linda Ronstadt

Release Date January 15, 2001
This is one of Linda Ronstadt's most polished albums, a collection of beautiful ballads and a couple of rockers. She introduced the world to Karla Bonoff with this album, and contrary to the review below, Linda Ronstadt was the FIRST to record these Karla Bonoff tunes-- they are not cover versions. HASTEN DOWN THE WIND was released in 1976. About a year later, Karla Bonoff released her first solo album and recorded her sparer version of these songs. Karla is well worth your time, but to hear the songs interpreted by one of the greatest singers of all time, you will need this album. Particularly noteworthy is Ronstadt's version of the Patsy Cline classic CRAZY, a slow, boozy, jazzy interpretation of this great country song.

Hollywood Town Hall

CD-Charts > Music > Country Rock
by: Jayhawks

Release Date August 28, 2006
As there was no review for this truly great record I thought I'd rectify matters. If you don't know this band I guess this one and "Tommorrow the green grass" are the obvious choices - both well worth having but I think this one is slightly fresher and tighter. If you like a bit of harmony based, super-tuneful (and tasteful) country rock then this will definitely be your thing.

I need to tell you the lead guitarist is seriously good - no over-indulgence; he just does a blistering good solo and gets out of the way. They're all good players/singers but he really stands out. None of these songs outstays their welcome and all of them retain (for me) an engaging charm and lack of pretension.
