Lovely album. BUT! I don't know why it's this album that gets all the plaudits from the transition period of Paul and Grace's Jefferson Airplane offshoot that eventually became Jefferson Starship. Of the transition period albums ( this, Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth..., and debateably Dragonfly)this is the album I listen to least . There are no songs that stick in my mind, that I want to play again and again, although it has a lovely dreamy feel, a great concept, stunning singing and playing; it's a bit like a dream with nothing to jolt you awake. But it's still better than almost everything. So 5 stars and let those who love it more than me sing its praises.

First off, Workingman's Dead is a brilliant album. Disregarding all the other factors that make it such a masterpiece, that it was the beginning of a whole new direction for the Dead, or even that it affirmed the Dead's place in rock-music history, by proving to the world what the Dead were capable of. Even ignoring all those factors which make it such a significant piece of work, purely on the music alone is one of the finest records ever made. But despite it's beautiful, laid-back, country-rock atmosphere, and Robert Hunter's lyrical wizardry, Workingman's Dead is not only a good album, but an extremely important one, in the development of the Grateful Dead, and the development of music as a whole. What makes the album all the more amazing, ... Read More:

Bonnie's recording career with Warner career had ended with some critics thinking that she was finished as a recording artist. They - and Warner - were proved wrong with this, her Capitol debut album, which was more successful than any of her Warner albums. The basic blues-rock style is still there, but this album is a little smoother, so appealing to a wider public. Winning a Grammy award for this album further boosted Bonnie's career.
The album is mainly filled with moody ballads, perhaps reflecting Bonnie's personal life when the album was recorded although Bonnie only wrote two songs - the first track (Nick of time) and the last track (The road's my middle name). The tempo picks up slightly for Thing called love (a John Hiatt song, ... Read More:

Go on, I bet you thought I made that up. Not so.
The Grateful Dead are an interesting idea(l) of a band much given to `groovin' as is their wont, and gettin-on-down at EVERY ROCK FESTIVAL OF THE SEVENTIES, looking every inch like a live advert for `Head and Shoulders'. Aah.. That`s much too easy. Let's take a closer look at what we're dealing with.
To start with, `Blues for Allah' is a VERY good title. Let's us know that despite all the hair and denim, we're not dealing with mugs here. The temptation to scoff derisorily is over-whelming, these trippy types are usually good for some shallow, simple-minded fun, at the expense of their lifestyles and ideals, but if we're talking music (and I will be in a minute!) it just isn't possible ... Absolutely Amazing!!!! I cant really think of any other way to describe this album. This is Melissa at her truest.. The lyrics are painfully honest and the beats are fantastic. My personal favourite is Silent Legacy, but there is not one song on this album I do not like. I Love them all!!! This is one of those albums that just will not age. Definately an album you'll find yourself singing to time and time again. To Melissa fans: Well, need I say more? This is a definite must!!!! To anyone curious to hear what Melissa Etheridge is all about: This is THE album to show u exactly that. Buy it!! You definately wont regret it!!!

As a record of Dylan's 'Tour 74', this is a really good album, although the CD issue could have included a bit more music for the money.
There are some great versions here, but you have to like The Band's tough approach to the songs and the fact that Bob shouts a lot rather than sings, for example on Most Likely You'll Go Your Way, the set opener.
However, many songs benefit from this approach, particularly All Along the Watchtower, which gets a Hendrix inspired treatment. Predictably, the folkies get excited by the solo tracks, but I prefer the tracks with The Band.
The Band's own songs are enjoyable, but add little to the versions on Rock of Ages. There's one new song, Endless Highway, which is a nice surprise. The sound ... Read More:

In the UK only Stage Fright was a chart album and it was not much more in the States with Rock of Ages added later.Hit singles were only minor in comparison to say Bob Dylan's.
As I'm not much of a rock fan-if that's supposed to mean heavy metal or hard rock-I see the Band as closer to country music and certainly to Americana which is just an extension to Roots music.
I don't pretend to understand rock critic language-which basically praises the first Band albums then claims to be disappointed with what followed when its really all the same thing-staying in the same turf.
The Band were in the right place at the right time on at least 2 occasions-Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan. With the latter they were a typically noisy rock'n'roll band who cut a single ... Read More:

This album had been in the CD cabinet for quite a while! Then last Christmas when we had family around my mum brought it out. I lisened to and i thought it was bloody brilliant! There has been very few albums in which you could lisen to every song and it would be great. 'Hotel california' and 'taking it easy' are the most well known songs from the album but 'new kid in town' most of the other tunes are class! Why buy the latest bands album with a few good songs, when you can buy The Very Best of the Eagles and actully get an album in which every song is excellent!!

This disc is fantastic. Shooter tells it as it is, sings incredibly well and makes you feel much better for listening to it. As anyone with their ear to the ground will know, modern country has no "o", so this cd is all the more special simply because it destroys all other competition. There's plenty of country, rock n roll, and ballads here. Good ole George Jones features in the opening two tracks which gives the cd a homely feel! I honestly can't say enough good things about this album. And the fact that the version with the bonus live tracks is much cheaper than the regular cd just screams "buy me!"
