Gram Parsons was always going to burn out rather than fade away, and when he did the sensational manner and events surrounding his demise, and his reputation as a dilettante playboy, threatened to overshadow his musical vision and legacy. There's no doubt that he changed the face of popular music, particularly at the country end of the spectrum, and if you harbour any doubt of this, then this double CD is the place to put your doubts to rest.
Disc one begins with half a dozen examples of his work with the International Submarine Band, mostly singles from the album Safe At Home, made for Lee Hazlewood's LHI label, released in 1967, and one previously unheard rehearsal take from the album sessions. Already his template of "Cosmic ... Read More:

The singles 'Ways to be Wicked' and 'Sweet Sweet Baby' struck me as very enthusiastically sung and played when I first heard them ('85), so I bought the cassette when I saw it cheap in '86. Maria McKee's voice enables these songs to retain their freshness whenever I dig the CD out. It's like country rock on speed, with canny lyrics from McKee, her half brother Brian MacLean (ex-Love), and LJ's Marvin Etzioni ('You are the light' is a magnificently hope-filled ballad, similarly themed to LJ's 'Shelter' and Maria's later 'Life is sweet'). These lyrics - and their delivery, remarkable from a voice so young - show fantastic narrative irony on 'Wait till we get home', 'Working Late', and 'Soap, Soup and Salvation': witty but admiring rockist spins ... While this is a Grace Slick, Paul Kantner album (chronologically 2nd album from the transition period between Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship), it is also an expression of a communal exploration by half of San Francisco's greatest talents at the height of their powers. It draws on the same fluctuating pool of talents that show up on "Blows against the Empire" and "Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun". And this pool of talent also appear on David Crosby's "If I could only remember my own name". I've never read any accounts of how these albums were made but it's obvious that the great bands were hanging out and jamming a lot during this period. And jamming at what a level! This is a soaring of talent and imagination that makes most that's come ... Read More:

I have this album on cassette and was delighted to be given an opportunity to own it on CD at last. It arrived today and I played it immediately, only to discover that the songs are not the identical versions to the ones on my 1970s cassette. This suggests that they may have had an alternative master disc in Australia. Most people won't notice a difference but I did.

'Luck of the draw' was the follow-up to the 'comeback' record 'Nick of Time', it was also produced by Don Was and follows a similar template. However, it was even more successful than 'Nick of Time' selling seven million copies and spawning two US top 20 singles. The title track is a brooding Paul Brady song and another Brady song "Not the only one" is also included, with both songs having a folky/Celtic feel that make them slightly different to Bonnie's increasingly AOR sound. Elsewhere Bonnie turns to songwriters like John Hiaitt for "No business" and Womack and Womack for "Good man, good woman" - performed as a duo with Delbert McClinton. For me the two real highlights are "I can't make you love me" a beautiful, bittersweet ballad with great piano from Bruce Hornsby, ... Read More:

I discovered Jimmy Buffet a few years ago, on one of my many trips on holiday to Florida, and instantly fell in love with the music. Its a tropical/ country and western hybrid which sounds a little odd, but works perfectly. He is huge in the U.S, but hardly known over here.
This best of collection is the perfect jumping on point, and is great value for money, its a perfect Summer album. I bought this first, and have gradually bought the individual albums as time has gone on, and love every one.
If you want to sit back with a cold beer or a margherita, and hear stories of caribbean beaches, tropical islands, beach bars, key west living, and food (plenty of shrimp!) this is the album for you.

This was supposedly Bonnie's comeback record after she had been dropped by Warners in the mid-80s, along with similar artists such as Van Morrison. Don Was was brought in as producer and the resulting record was a return to the format of her best Warner's albums, ie a mixture of blues, ballads, folk and rock. Despite good critical response her previous records had never really sold well but 'Nick of Time got great reviews, won Grammies AND sold millions. I think it deserved to (but then again I think many of her previous albums should have) it sounds great, it has some good, commercial songs and Bonnie and her fabulous voice are the centre of everything.
She rocks out on tracks like John Hiatt's wonderful "Thing Called Love", "Real Man" and "I Will Not Be Denied" ... Read More:
