On "The Beatles' Hits" Barrow says to write a very nasty letter to him if in 10 years (1973) the pop people of the 70's aren't talking with respect about the songs being "early examples of modern beat standards taken from The Lennon & McCartney Songbook"! If they only knew almost 40 years later these "modern beat standards" are still being enjoyed (and respected, of course) by millions. For those of you lucky to have seen the Ozarks on their Spring 1976 tour of the UK this is a must have. For those of you whom haven't heard of this group it's time to fill a gap.
Blessed with fine country musicians, superb songwriters, and seemingly at least four great voices the Ozarks are a country group with pure country origins who were happy to move in the direction of rock, whilst most country rock of that time was from artists moving in the opposite direction. Sno Angel Like You

Gelb is an interesting fellow. If you heard him, you know generally what to expect in terms spare arrangements and the Leonard Cohen-meets-Morricone tone of his pieces.

Personally, his solo work before never moved me like Giant Sand in the early nineties. Yet the guy deserves to be listened to so I did, and I bought the abums too. More out of loyalty than confidence.

This album may just be the one that convinces me. To the usual Howe fare a chorus joins him, and they make the whole difference. Gelb voice never sounded so right-on like it does here enveloped in his own brand of gospel music.

Not quite "Core Of Enchantment," it may just offer enough heavens to convert you.

I had long assumed that The Byrds had used up all their ammo once Clark, Crosby and then Hillman had left. This 1970 set proves otherwise. Jim McGuinn built a great new band around him, with Clarence White's fabulous, incendiary playing on the live half of the original album a highlight. Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, meanwhile, provide a restless and inspired rhythm section, which is as important to keeping the 16-minute version of 'Eight Miles High' on fire as the guitar interplay. In addition, McGuinn had several great songs left over from an aborted musical he'd collaborated on. The best of these are the live 'Lover On The Bayou' which opens the album and the studio cut, 'Chestnut Mare' which features more wonderful work from White.

The Convincer

A convincer is a con artist whom convinces the mark that he wishes to part with his wealth. I was convinced to buy this album from the name Nick Lowe alone but after `Dig My Mood' was part expecting to feel a little short changed but was pleasantly surprised.

The album starts strongly with Nick's `Homewrecker' and the perfectly selected cover `Only a Fool Breaks his Own Heart' and just when you think things can't get any better `Lately I've Let Things Slide' raises the standard with one of Nick's best ever songs.

`She's Got Soul' slows things down and with `Cupid Must Be Angry' a soulful country groove carries the album through some of its weaker moments, which are still stronger than most other albums released in 2001.

The Little Willies featuring Norah Jones

Well i've finally got around to buying this album and boy why did i wait so long!! In parts pure western swing as in the opening number "Roly Poly" and sometimes downright "barroom sleazy" enough to make even Tom Waits crack a smile (see track 2 I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive with a vocal reminiscent of Rodney Crowell circa the "Heartworn Highways" period)this is a pure gem.

As for Nora Jones taking lead vocal on their cover of "Elvis's" "Love Me" (as well as a couple of others) its as much shivers down the back time as the 1st time i saw her on Jools Hollands "Later" doing "Cold Cold Heart"! The overall feel of this album though puts me in mind to watch "Oh Brother Where Art Thou'" again and conjures up Alison Krauss. Ok ... Read More:

Long May You Run

After all the dark, bizarre musings of the early 1970s, 'Long May You Run' sounds like Neil Young's holiday. All but one of his five songs here have a light, positive feel, while Stills' contributions tend to have a moodier feel. There's a fresh, seafaring feel to much of the album, what with four of the first five songs mentioning the ocean. The album's strongest point is the quality of the band that Stills and Young assembled. Three of the other four musicians contribute harmony backing vocals, including versatile Joe Walsh sideman, Joe Vitale. The addition of a second percussionist adds a lilting dimension to some of the songs, while Jerry Aiello's organ work frequently enhances the atmosphere, particularly on the sultry blues of 'Make Love To You'. One More Song/Randy Meisner

Randy Meisner left the Eagles in the aftermath of Hotel California (1976) and released a (pretty uninspiring) solo effort in 1978.

Then, out of the blue, came 'One More Song' - a truly superb album. Any Eagles fan will love it. With 'Hearts on Fire', Meisner kicks off the way he means to continue, and doesn't put a note wrong thereafter - ALL of the songs are top class stuff, but a special mention must be made of 'Gotta Get Away', 'Come on Back to Me' and 'White Shoes'. The title track is sublime.

'One More Song' did appear on CD some years ago, but this had latterly become a rara avis, used copies commanding three-figure sums. So this two-on-one release, offering one of the very best 'former Eagle' albums at an attractive price, is a 'must ... Read More:

Silver and Gold

For some reason this NY album passed my by...but since buying it I don't think it's come out of my CD player.
The album is acoustic, with gentle backing from the usual players.
The songs are simple and concise but also catchy as hell.
This is a classic Neil album, on par with his commercial best.
