Chely's albums have been mainly traditional/contemporary country but she decides to go more Pop/Country with this album. It has a more acoustic vibe to it which is good but it's a shame she didn't keep it country enough.
However,it's still a good album. She kicks things off with the great It's The Song(which sums up chely perfectly).Other great ballads are Back Of The Bottom Drawer,I Got Him Ready For You,Southside Of Lonesome and Wheels. She also does a hauntingly, deep song about her relationship with her mother called Between A Mother And A Child.
Chely wrote most of the songs on this,so you get to really see what a great writer she really is.Her voice as always sounds amazing, I just hope for her next album she keeps it more country...

Only recently discovered MMJ after seeing them at Hop Farm Festival.I was amazed how cool they were with that alternative country vibe coupled with great vocals. They like to jam it up too.
I've now bought the last 4 studio albums and I agree with Kingrizla and MJ Hulme that this one is the best.It may not have the best production but it has the attitude and some of their classic material. The slower stuff will go down well if you like the Fleet Foxes.Believe me if you are into My Morning Jacket your collection is lost without this album.Take me to Okonokos!!

A long time fan of Vince but was disapointed with this collection. Vince failed to make good use of his guests ( Listen to "Willie Nelson & Friends" to here how guest duets should be done.) and the whole collection had a "One Take" feel to it. Vince can do better!

When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band embarked on this project, they invited Bill Monroe to take part but he declined. He regretted that decision once he heard the album, which took him and everybody else by surprise. While Bill was absent, other top country and bluegrass singers and musicians participated. These included Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Merle Travis and Jimmy Martin. Nobody intended that a triple LP would be released but all the participants had so much fun recording together that they recorded a lot more material than they originally intended. It did not please the record label management, who were doubtful that an album of bluegrass and old-time country music could sell at all. Nevertheless, they agreed to release ... Read More:

The first thing you notice when listening to `At Dawn' if, like me, you've approached their back catalogue, er, backwards, is how faithful it is to a kind of alt-country orthodoxy when compared to the more magpie-like tendencies of `It Still Moves' and `Z'. Arguably it is more a consistency of mood than genre, given that it rarely rocks out in the ways that they later afforded themselves, but their sultry Kentucky twangcore does embrace languid Beach Boys harmonies and reggae among other appropriated musical tinges. The tempo is invariably unhurried and spacious, all reverb and humid ambience - there is a palpable sense of Kentucky's electrically-charged summer air - even if the sound is a little more polished than that of its successor.

Unlike any amount of so-called pop princesses, who would be nothing without manipulative gurus behind them (and who are really not very much even then), and all those witless Pop Idol wannabees who mistake a quick track to success for honest talent, Maria McKee was - and remains - the real thing. A genuine songwriting ability - words and music - she's also a wonderful performer, and blessed with a voice that can thrill, scare and soothe by turns.
This CD is a bargain on Amazon right now, and if you've ever warbled along to 'Show Me Heaven' or enjoyed Fergal Sharkey's take on Maria's 'A Good Heart', buy this at once. It is a wonderful record of two gigs (in Manchester and Cambridge in the early 90s), when Maria showcased mostly material from her first two solo ... Read More:
