Lovely album. BUT! I don't know why it's this album that gets all the plaudits from the transition period of Paul and Grace's Jefferson Airplane offshoot that eventually became Jefferson Starship. Of the transition period albums ( this, Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth..., and debateably Dragonfly)this is the album I listen to least . There are no songs that stick in my mind, that I want to play again and again, although it has a lovely dreamy feel, a great concept, stunning singing and playing; it's a bit like a dream with nothing to jolt you awake. But it's still better than almost everything. So 5 stars and let those who love it more than me sing its praises.

A supergroup of sorts, Howlin' Rain features Ethan Miller from Comets On Fire, John Moloney from Sun Burned Hand Of The Man and Ian Gradek on bass. Unlike fellow Comets On Fire alumnus Ben Chasny, for his latest release, Miller has elected to create an old-fashioned free-wheeling country rock album, but one which throws in a few crunching crescendos for good measure.
Most of the songs are straighter than might be expected from some of the defining members of New Weird America, but there's always a hint of eccentricity somewhere nearby. Calling Lightening With A Scythe begins as a sweet, Steely Dan impersonation before imploding for a minute with a flurry of fierce feedback. Later, the dusty opening to Roll On The Rusty Days mimics a ... Read More:

In the deepest depths of 1967 you will find this 'fish' scouring around the bottom. Not an album for those who want that light west coast psychedelic sound. Oh no. This is an antidote Sergeant Pepper it seems to take up the baton of Beatles' Revolver, that rough and ready sound - 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is expanded upon in tracks such as 'Death Sound Blues' and 'Bass Strings'. Yep, this is what it should have been - not that happy, hippy-trippy stuff which usually pollutes our ears.

IF YOU LOOK AT IT RIGHT! ... It could be an illusion, but I might as well try. That line from Scarlett Begonias always stood out. When I bought this as a teenager in the 70's, I was just becoming a big Dead fan and had recently been blown away by the trippiest concert I had ever seen. I slowly began moving in (to the MARS HOTEL) and became the guest who never left - the lizard on the wall, just hangin' out with the band. A few other DEAD recordings were earliest favorites, but it didn't take long for this one to become a regular spin, and it always gave me a welcome lift (still does). I wouldn't ever WANT to leave!
This album feels to me like the FAMILY ALBUM, a milestone recording documenting the huge build-up to that point (with the ... Read More:

I had avoided this album because so many people had written it off at the time and subsequently, what are they on?
I picked this up recently and by cricky if this is not the best acoustic album I have heard from Neil Young. The album positively hums with atmosphere; the album contains some of in my opinion Neil Young's best acoustic songs. 'Little Wing' and 'The Old Homestead' from the aborted 1975 'Homegrown' project sound just as good as the newer songs such as 'Hawks and Doves'

I first bought this on import cassette in the 70s on the strength of the single 'You're No Good'. Over 30 years later, it's still my favourite album. I think her version of 'Willing' (the Little Feat song) is the most uplifting song I've ever heard. The last two tracks, 'Keep Me From Blowing Away' and 'You Can Close Your Eyes', are stunning. There are no low points on the album. Linda Ronstadt is a brilliant singer with a unique ability to cover a huge range of different material. This is her best record, in my opinion, and a fantastic place to start for anyone wishing to buy one of her records.

I first heard Melissa Etheridge's music in the early 90s when I was in America and was lucky enough to see her in concert at Jones Beach, Long Island, which is an open-air ampitheatre, one warm summer's evening, and she just blew me away. That concert was probably the best I have ever been to and is something I will never forget. She has one of the strongest, most unique voices around as well as being a fantastic guitarist and songwriter. I have all of her albums and this is definitely one of her best, although they are all good, particularly Yes I Am and Brave & Crazy (which has the amazing song, You Can Sleep While I Drive on). Lucky is a bit more polished and slick, as you would expect from a singer who has been around for so many years, but ... Read More:

Wonderful and indispensable. But why is it listed as a David Freiberg album. He's on it and he contributes some good songs, but it's a Grace slick/Paul Kantner album(2 of Jefferson Airplane's singer/songwriters), from the transition period between Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship(3rd in the series), usually listed as by Slick/Kantner/Freiberg. It's a shame that these albums are so little known, because they are up with the best Jefferson Airplane albums. They never again quite reach the heights of wild rock guitar excitement they reached with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar and Jack Casady on bass but other things compensate.
The 4 transition albums "Blows against the Empire"(my least played but the most praised), "Sunfighter", "Baron von Tollbooth..." ... Read More:

Although a hugh fan of Miss Crow, I was a little bit disappointed with this album when it was released. I have had it on in my car recently to revisit it and think I now know why I was so disappointed.
The album has a superb start with My Favourite Mistake and There Goes the Neighbourhood, but after that in my opinion the album goes downhill, whilst still, enjoyable none of the following tracks, linger in the mind. Average only, go buy her greatest hits instead.
