What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.
The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.
Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play ... Read More:

I bought this cd as its regarded by many as being influential on rock genres that were to follow. While there are a few decent tracks here, the bulk of the album is pretty mundane. I can see where U.S bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd may have been influenced, but 1968 releases by Cream, Moody's, Tull, Zep etc are far superior, both in material and musicianship and would form more of a basis this side of the pond.

This is an excellent CD, and you don't have to be a 'Neil Young Fan' (whatever that means!) to enjoy it. The opener, Unknown Legend, is an excellent introduction to the laid back quality of the album, which continues without a real duff track right the way to the end. Even Natural Beauty, clocking in at an impressive 10+ minutes, holds my attention right until it merges into the rainforest noises at the very end. Songs like One of These Days and Such a Woman are almost ethereal, they somehow sound timeless, hints of a Nashville sound coming and going here and there. If you have been put off Neil Young by impressions of an angry guitar weilding man playing long guitar solos, well, rest assured, THAT Neil Young does not make an appearance here.

Neil emerged from the dark brilliance of his brooding mid-seventies period to make his most accessible album since Harvest. If he is mostly known for folk, country, and rock, this album is firmly rooted in the folk/country categories, which he does as well as anyone.
This is a very fine album that demonstrates that Young can still be deeply reflective whilst maintaining a mellow - though never bland - approach to the music. As well as a great couple of openers, look out for Four Strong Winds, a country standard that perfectly fits the tone of the album.

I had long assumed that The Byrds had used up all their ammo once Clark, Crosby and then Hillman had left. This 1970 set proves otherwise. Jim McGuinn built a great new band around him, with Clarence White's fabulous, incendiary playing on the live half of the original album a highlight. Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, meanwhile, provide a restless and inspired rhythm section, which is as important to keeping the 16-minute version of 'Eight Miles High' on fire as the guitar interplay. In addition, McGuinn had several great songs left over from an aborted musical he'd collaborated on. The best of these are the live 'Lover On The Bayou' which opens the album and the studio cut, 'Chestnut Mare' which features more wonderful work from White.
The song quality isn't consistent ... Read More:

This is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone that calls themselves a fan of Bob Dylan. Be really smart though, and wait till you can get it for under a tenner, like I did. Not that it's not worth full price - it is; but you can feel even more smug when you've got it for a bargain price.
Enough of my smugness! What about the product?
This collection of rare Dylan recordings (outtakes, live recordings and such) have been packaged on 3 CDs, and ordered more or less chronologically. CD 1 covers a period of just over 2 years from late 1961 (beginning with a brave performance from before the release of Dylan's first album in which he pretty much verbally destroys New York in front of a New York audience - "Hard Times in New York Town") through to early 1963. ... Another great album from Emmylou. Some people think this is a classic, and I cannot blame them. It has many great songs, such as the title track and (You Never Can Tell) C'est la vie. Emmylou has a great voice and she is a country singer number one.
