Back in Brazil

Following on, and using the same winning formula as the collection In Africa, and In Brazil, we now have Back In Brazil. Gilles' decision to have a full CD of archive stuff alongside a CD of new stuff is better than it sounds...there are some great Brazilian tunes in the vaults, and I have found myself listening to classics from the sixties and seventies quite a bit, although admittedly I prefer the new stuff.

Disc one, Das Velhas, (the oldies?) highlights are wide and varied from Salsa orchestras to intimate Bossa Nova tunes, but my faves are Jorge Ben (natch), Luis Eca's intriguing loping sound, and Antonio Adolfo's sweeping big band arrangement. 31/2 stars.

El Agua De La Vida

I just love this album, from start to finish its brilliant. Perhaps I'm biased though... I have a (background in and) love for Scottish music and have always enjoyed the sensuality of Latin music. These guys have blended my two favourite genres of music brilliantly....I haven't been able to stop myself from dancing whenever I hear the first few bars of Cumbia Celtica.

Una Christina puramente latinisima y volviendo a sus mas puras raices latinas... no lo pudo haber hecho mejor; una exquisita pronunciacion del idioma (y eso que no sabe hablar español), baladas tan preciosas como SI NO TE HUBIERA CONOCIDO, POR SIEMPRE TU, PERO ME ACUERDO DE TI, melodias tan movidas como GENIO ATRAPADO, UNA MUJER, VEN CONMIGO, ritmos latinos como FALSAS ESPERANZAS, CUANDO NO ES CONTIGO y para rematar al oyente una version tan angelical de MI REFLEJO, y tenemos uno de los mejores y mas deliciosos discos en español... SIMPLEMENTE INOLVIDABLE.

Latin Fever

This is a magnificent showcase for Latin music from the last 50 years. You will recognise most of them, I promise.

My favourites: Livin' La Vida Loca (better than the original), Bamboleo, Bingo Bongo, La Bamba, Mas Que Nada (especially the intro), Soul Bossa Nova (Austin Powers), Oye Come Ya, Sway, Fantasy (better than before), Guantanamera (both old and new versions).

My absolute favourite is 'Cuba'.

The Carnabeat mixes are brilliant, but perhaps getting a bit dated now.

There are a few surprises too.

Mi Sueno

The world outside Cuba discovered Ibrahim Ferrer's soft, smoky vocals through the release of the Grammy-winning "Bueno Vista Social Club" released on the World Circuit/Nonesuch label. Ferrer sang four of the 12 non-instrumental tunes on the album. With Ry Cooder, he later recorded two further CD's for the label (in 1999 and 2003, respectively.)

Ibrahim Ferrer's favourite musical form was the "bolero." In 2005, he set out to record an album featuring only such pieces. Ferrer died in August 2005 before having completed the project.

Hommage à Piazzolla

Immediately after the release of this Cd Gidon Kremer gave a concert in Royal festival hall & brought the audience to their feet on a number of occasions. he next time he gave a concert a few years later he brought the audience to their knees with despair. his Cd however has the most superb collection of Piazzollas music & a Russian or Polish piece which rarely appears on tango CDs, to my knowledge only 3 times, which is great music to dance to. I absolutely love this CD and highly recommend it.

This is a good collection of tango tracks to practice your Argentinean Tango steps to. There are only 2 tracks on here I don't like and the rest are ranging from good to excellent, for dancing as well as just to listen to. Very good value for money!

Sao Paulo Confessions

I'm Brazilian and I had never heard about Suba until yesterday when I watched a program from BBC4 that showed Brazilian music through the 80's and 90's and I downloaded the album and just loved it! The way he mixed the Brazilian rhythms with foreings ones is just great! I recommend to everybody.
