After the Clash disbanded and before the Mescaleros really took off, Joe Strummer was in some kind of wilderness. He had his 'London Calling' radio show on the BBC World Service, but no real outlet for his own musical abilities, then along comes a commission to do a film score. Ignore the fact that the film bombed, the music is stunning. Imagine an edgier version of Ennio Morricone spread over an entire atmospheric album of western sounds and you have some idea of what Walker achieves. Joe Strummer really achieved a lot with this album so it's a shame he never saw a lot of recognition for it back when it might have mattered to him.

This is full of really good catchy songs. If you liked the hits Hero, or Escape buy the album, then you will want to buy "7" and "Insomniac" and "Enrique"! I did and they're all very good. This is melodic, emotive writing singing and production. So many good songs, which Enrique co-writes. His voice seems to carry a lot of emotion and feeling. I must say I'm hooked on it, some years after I first heard "Hero" I'll say. Better late than...! Buy it and enjoy. Cheers.

The Beginners Guide series is garnering a reputation for collecting quality tunes in a triple CD set...and BGT Cuba is no exception. The three CDs each cover a different style...

CD1 "Classic Cuba' has all the Buena Vista style artists: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Cunbanismo etc. and there are a few classic tunes that many will know from other sources, but the quality bar is high, with most tunes displaying the easy languid grooves and harmonies we have come to know and love. *****

CD2 "Jazzy Cuba' ...says it all...the cuban grooves being a little more subservient to solos and spotlights on individual talents...still exuberant and danceable, but perhaps less of interest to DJs. This is my least favourite of the three.***
