Elis Regina is very possibly the best brazilian MPB singer ever and she proves it here.
But her voice and choice of songs also show her up as much more than that. Because she ventures into risky territory at the time (mostly the 60s and the 70s) in Brazil under a military dictatorship with the ensuing censorship...
She ventures into rock, folk, psychadelism, protest song.
Always remaining true to herself: "this world is just a passage, a place for us to learn - it would make no sense otherwise"

Great stuff, instant sunshine, I love it. Timeless was fun and interesting but it was just a taster for this which really mixes up the old and new to create something special. I'm so glad it has proved popular and brought SM back to the fore again. Don't think you are being shortchanged by having 2 versions of 2 songs, they are quite different and well worth inclusion. Waters of March is a fascinating song and now here we have it in French too. No idea what they are talking about but it sounds great. There is such a lot going on in some of the tracks with all those weird Brazilian instruments being hit and blown and rattled. It's a mistake to call most of what Madredeus do fado, even if Teresa Salgueiro has her roots in that music. This works in a very different way, seeming at first more monotonous, yet ultimately haunting. Fado is more emotional. This, like much world music, is more calculated. Like the previous reviewer, I don't like world music, but I am a long-standing lover of fado. Until recently, I have tended to dismiss Madredeus, but for a little while I've been listening much more to their songs, and find myself increasingly captivated. Having first heard Julieta Venegas' 'Andar Conmigo', I was really interested in hearing more and am SO pleased I took the time. Limon y Sal is really a great pop album, with such a diverse range of vocal styles from Venegas, interesting original lyrics and great instrumentation throughout.
My two favourite songs are the really stirring 'Te Voy a Mostrar' ('I am going to show you'), a passionate plea to a lover that life has brought them together and she is going to show him she is the woman for him. The vocals are really superb on this song - gentle but strong, and really capturing a slight sense of desperation. The lyrics are also really quite intriguing and the song itself just sticks in your head.
