The collection of tangos on this double CD is good but far from the loveliest or best or greatest as the title suggests. There are some highly unusual tracks on them such as Fuga Y Misterio played by 12 cellos and hence the 2 stars. I have played tracks from this compilation for my dance people and have not found a great deal of enthusiasm for them.

I ordered it after buying and liking Mi Sangre and found 'Un Dia Normal' just as good. I'd heard some of the songs (A Dios Le Pido, Es Por Ti, La Paga, Fotografia) as bonus tracks on Mi Sangre which helped. Those four are all favourites along with Mala Gente (gorgeously venomous), La Historia de Juan (Lyrically heartbreaking) and La Noche (Can't stop dancing to it). Those are favourites, but I can't really say there's a bad track on here. Plus translating the songs has expanded my vocab and helped on my Spanish course!!
I really recommend it to anyone, whether you understand Spanish or not, if you like great music, you'll love this album.

If like me you used to dismiss music that was not sung in English, then buy this now and change your view on the music out there in the wide world. I got into Manu Chao by chance when I spoke to a very knowing person who advised me to try him out. Not many people have heard of Manu Chao presumably because he is just not written about in the British music press. The music itself as described by others is a mix of world music, sung in several languages including English. The songs just bring joy and addiction. I haven't stopped listening to this album since buying it. It is hard to describe what the music brings to me, but a smile to my face. I know that you don't need to know what is being sung about as long as the music is good, the music is great. ... Read More:

Only discovered this fabulous album by accident, after investing next-to-nothing in a copy of the double LP found in a charity shop. I'm neither a world-music buff nor a particular fan of Brazilian music, and only gave it a spin out of curiosity. One play was enough to make me realise that it's a very special record.
The album is credited as being a Milton Nascimento/Lo Borges collaboration, who share most of the lead vocals, but others help out on the songwriting. The overall result is a very eclectic mix of Brazilian music with Beatlesish pop/rock influences. Some of the songs are very sombre and downbeat ("Cais", "Dos Cruces", "Os Povos"), others so incredibly joyful and uplifting that they will literally cleanse your soul. Sounds a bit over ... I've watched to film a couple of times and I have to say it grows on you - perhaps it just needs more thoughful watching than most films. It's definately not the sort of film hollywood makes - muchh too european and all the better for that. It also helps that Sally Potter is a dancer as well as director (and in this one of the principle actors).
Tango takes a lot of understanding - it's history, context in argentina, and the modern adoption throughout the world like no other dance.
On this CD there are a variety of interesting tracks - and as they were used for a dance orientated film, mostly danceable.
Try renting the film Tango Lesson [1997]and watching a couple of times - I think you'll find you want this CD and some ... Read More:

I've been a fan of Senor coconut since he was featured on radio 5 about 18 months ago. He somehow manages to fuse serious latin beats into quite tongue in cheek songs.
There's not lot to this album, especially as the last track is the same as 'Smoke on the Water' but sung in spanish but 'Beat it' must be heard to be believed
I listen to this album not only to cheer me up but also to dance to. His Cha Cha Chas are bang on tempo and you could hardly fail to love this album.

In the early-to-mid 1980s there was precious little chart music which had any sense of history. I loved the original Matt Bianco, with Basia and Danny White, because they were able to roll 1950s and 1960s cuban and brazillian influences together with a synth-pop new-wave attitude, on 1984's "Who's Side Are You On?". Songwriting was obviously taken seriously, and the hard edge sound of 1980s synthesisers proved a surprisingly good vehicle for delivering the cha-cha, bossa nova, rhumba and even hard swing. Then the group split, and 'Matt Bianco', under Mark Reilly, became a rather bland latin dance band, that everyone compared with the sub-optimal yuppie schmooze of Sade.
Fortunately, Basia and Danny White continued under Basia's name, producing well ... Read More:
