As the story unfurls around you, the stirring sounds of tradegy and death create images of Gothic proportions. The "actors" sing out their role charged with emotion. Almost operatic in its delivery the principal character seeks to enter the garden of sanctuary despite her past sins of luring children to their deaths - not a happy story I can tell you, but there are beautifully sung moments with lyrical words.
It would not be out of place in a sung in a gothic setting such as a church with candles all around (which incidentally is where I first heard it). The musical accompaniment is limited to a few instruments, creating an almost sparse atmosphere and where appropriate an awesome feeling of loss and betrayal.

This is the first Ryan album I bought and now I have all of his stuff it's still one of my favourites. He's unquestionably (to me) one of the most talented singers/songwriters there has ever been, and how other less deserving artists continuously receive more attention and sales remains beyond me, but the sensible people know who's best!
Gold is Ryan's most accessible album, in the sense that the songs are catchy (and most of them are radio-playable), but that doesn't mean they are any less intelligent than any of his other material. He sings thought-provoking, challenging lyrics which always repay careful listening.
Highlights for me include New York, New York, Answering Bell, Rescue Blues, Wild Flowers, Firecracker... ... Read More:

Lets start by admitting that this is not the equal in sheer energy of Kleiber's great performance. But lets also acknowledge that this is a Brahms Fourth to live with. Classical lyricism is nicely balanced with romantic drama in a performance I think Wand or Kempe would have approved of.
The strings are a little lacking in weight compared to some performances, but not so much as to be a deficiency. Abravanel doesn't downplay the drama but that last degree of excitement that a bigger body of strings could have brought is a vital missing ingredient, so 4 stars "only".
The filler of the two well known Overtures is very fine, dramatic, tragic, jolly and mellifluous as required.
The recordings were originally a Vanguard ... Read More:

.....it loses a star because the recording has been made in 48 MHz surround, not the 96Mhz of which the DVD-A format is capable. This isn't just technical nit-picking, it means that the recording loses a lot of the sparkle and presence which is the hallmark of DVD-A. Having said which, the actual performance is terrific, rollicking fun, meticulously reconstructing the original film score. Definitely worth a listen, definately superior to the CD version, it's just a shame they could have got more out of the format.
