Zappa had been experimenting with surround channels since the early years, and these are tranfers of the tapes to prove it.

Some are pretty basic technically (just a mono rear surround) and others are more enveloping - thank God the music is very good as well.
Fans will enjoy this one, along with the Halloween DVD-A

Although I found the initial track not the best one to start the collection (not quite sure whether they should have included it at all), this dvd audio disc provides for a very enjoyable experience. Being a tribute disc to Henry Mancini it has a healthy sprinkling of the ones that almost got away rather than the obvious choices. At less than 50 minutes though the running time is not overly generous (I wish they would have included 'Lujon'). There are a couple of vocal contributions by Diana Krall and although her piano playing is generally stronger than her singing ability, a very pleasing and sensitive highlight for me is the final track 'Soldier In The Rain'. with such a mass of material to choose from,it is difficult for any record label to put together a 'good' collection that shows the entire range of Elvis' great songs but this goes a long way toward it. Well worth the place on the shelf.

When Chicago's albums were first issued on vinyl, this was number five in the series, but it was their first-ever single album, following three doubles and a live quadruple! And it is arguably their best. Despite a career stretching out over twenty plus albums and thirty odd years, this is probably the apex of a creative trajectory that started high, remained high but peaked here before the slow descent into MOR.

All the characteristics of their earlier works are here, the complex brass arrangements, the political statements and extended instrumental interludes but in the context of this album, they are distilled into a more concentrated whole where there is virtually not a dull moment. I could hear no evidence of this recording being in any way surround sound. I get better distribution of sounds using my amps' own surround sound on stereo mp3's! The majority of the sound appeared to come as a single block from my front 3 speakers. Maybe I'm spoiled after hearing Tubular bells 2003 on DVD Audio, that DVD recording is truly astonishing.

"A total classic record, that is unbeatable in many ways".

This particular tribute came from one Paul McCartney, who over the last forty years has declared his never ending love for 'Pet Sounds'. And we sure as hell don't know more than he does, so it goes without saying that 'Pet Sounds' is one of the greatest albums ever made.

But what astonishes the most, is that Brian Wilson wrote this virtually single handedly. The Beatles had just released the amazing 'Revolver', for Wilson to come out with something even better.
