Frankly, this is the best darned record she has done. I have most of the others as well.......nothing, but nothing, has changed my mind yet..!
I can play this record anytime and it always evokes memories of my youth - when I first heard it.. If any record makes that kind of impression that long ago then I can't fail to rate it as a five...
It's one of my classic albums

Let me begin by saying that I am a big Barenaked Ladies fan, stretching all the way back to the first time I saw them in Toronto in '91 and bought their independently produced Yellow Tape. Having said this, I'm not going to gush about everything they release.

What seems clear with the `Are Men' is that they picked all of the best and most interesting songs for `Are Me' and this latter release is made up of the rest. This is a glorified B-Sides collection, the sort of tracks that would have been included with the CD singles back in the days of old. Don't get me wrong, BNL doing B-Sides is better than most bands' best work!

So this is a fun collection as you'd expect, but doesn't serve up anything new or particularly ... Read More:

With The Band playing some of the best songs ever with performers such as Van Morrison, Mudy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell or Staple Singers, this DVD Audio is History, includes also photos and lyrics.Some say the movie is still better, I say the movie is a must, from the same filmmaker Scorsese with the recent "shine a light".The Last waltz is the essence of rock, "shine a light" it is only the essence of "image".Imagine that Last waltz' s film was made thirty years ago...

I have a Playstation3 and a Panasonic DVD player - the disc played the audio brilliantly through the Panasonic (and the 5:1 speakers) but with no video and on the PS3 it played the video and screeched the audio at me. I have since discovered that the PS3 isn't SACD compatible (yet!), which is what was causing the sound to be as it was. However, I don't have an explanation as to why the video didn't work on the Panasonic as yet. It's an impressive sound sampler to have if you can get the audio 'and' video to work on the same player.

I got this in my "get everything hi-res" phase, a phase which produced a few lemons, but this wasn't one of them. The attraction was the 2nd and 3rd on one disc, but its virtues far outweigh that.

Abravanel conducts with a good feel for Brahm's tempi and sense of contrasts (unlike Haitink in his recent SACD of the 3rd). He differentiates themes and movements well whilst still sounding idiomatically Brahmsian. There's as much of a warmth to the recording as there is to the orchestral sound.
