Trojan Dancehall Box Set

I have only a very limited knowledge of Dancehall but this was not what I expected. It sits very nicely with the rest of my Trojan box sets (Rastafari, Dub 1 and 2, Ganja and Roots). If you have these and like them, you will be pleased by this box set too. Dub heads in particular will be surprised.

If you have King Tubby's dangerous dub (greensleeves) you will recognise a lot of the version on here.

As it says on the sleevenotes this box set covers the beginnings of Dancehall reggae and is much more like a tribute to the Roots Radics/King Tubby and others (lovers rock) from this period.

Disc 3 in particular stands out.

Those of you who are familiar with Kalonji's super prolific output were probably expecting a mellower follow up to "Ain't gonna see us fall" in the same way that the "Life" album came after the dancehall infused "Stay Focused". The subject matter of this album is very similar to "Life" with its emphasis on love and righteousness, although the inclusion of "Streets be calling" would have been better placed on the "Brighter Day" album with its gun talk somewhat out of place on a much mellower effort. Stand out cuts include "One Love" on the majestic "I love King Selassie riddim, the channel one updated riddim on "It's possible" (which was also revisited for Capleton's wicked "Critics" choon, "Someone loves you" over the updated Sleng teng riddim ...
