This compilation is way outside the usual area covered by reggae reissue label Blood & Fire, i.e. 1970s roots & dub. Apart from the first track, which is not a cover but a wicked slice of organ-led instrumental funk, the album entirely consists of reggae cover versions of classic soul tunes. Now this could in consequence have been a really rubbish compilation, because nearly every Jamaican singer or vocal group has covered numerous soul songs, often perfunctorily, but the quality control here is of the highest order, with no tracks less than very good.
Stand out tracks on such a consistent album are hard to find, but personal faves include both the Ken Boothe tunes (his superb take on Ain't No Sunshine is as good a version ... Read More:

This, to my mind, is the best of the solo albums by the extraordinary Shakti violinist. On this disc he plays long traditional raga forms rather than attempting to pull off cute, western style pop tunes, as he does on some of the other releases. I've had this disc for many years now and it is a habit of mine to put it on really loud on hot summer evenings, and have it drifting magically out into the garden. Of all his albums, even those recorded with Shakti, this is the one where you come to appreciate what a truly astonishing violinist he is, in my humble opinion untouched by any western violinist I know. Yet this album is not just about virtuousity. Like all good raga it builds very slowly from rich soulful beginnings, moving very gradually from serenity ... Read More:

This was one of my favourite dub albums of the 80's. The reggae greats series were best-of compilations, good introductions to the bands featured, but this one was exclusively mixed, and essentially a dub version of Black Uhuru's Chill Out. To my ears Sly & Robbie's pure dub albums can sound too dry and sparse; no such worries here as Paul Smykle's remix produced a very lush spacey sound, nothing dull or repetitive, just an evolving, ambient, deep album. Even after 15 years of ambient and electronic music it stands up to repeated listenings. S & R's best ever album, alongside Language Barrier.

Do you remember `Black Mountain Side' from the seminal first album by Led Zeppelin? Yes, that was Jimmy Page's brief showcase of his talent on the acoustic 12-string guitar, treating us to an oriental-infused and orgiastic display of sheer, goddamn musical drama. As a teenager it blew me away-I had never heard anything like it, and it took me years before I did again. I thought that discovering John McLaughlin's Shakti project would be the nearest I would ever come to experiencing the delights of `Black Mountain Side' (and that in itself was pretty momentous, culminating in my witnessing the finest musical performance of my life at London's South Bank when he reformed them as Remember Shakti). But now with James Blackshaw (and also Jack Rose on the superb `Raag Manifestoes') ... Read More:
