In a similar entertaining vein of balkan frenzy I would also recommend Remixed by De Amsterdam Klezmer Band and from Shantel: Disko Partizani, Bucovina Club Vol 1 and Vol 2.

West meets East

There are better Shankar's out there and even the real thing. However I grew up with this one. Well the vinyl version. Something seems different about the CD. I can not quite put my finger on it. It may just be that twenty yeas past.

However I still play this while writing reviews; it helps me to focus. It is like my security blanket or the old Ford pickup. It is there.

There are seven pieces each has its own personality and they do not blend that well. On the other hand it is not monotonous. The two musical structures intertwine and you are part. The Real Rock

Released in 1987, the music on this album is quite unique amongst the Shankar collection. The mixture of traditional Indian classical with electronic synths, basses, autoharp etc. brings about a more modern feel that succeeds without making it overtly commercial.

There are no traditional long ragas and the sitar is not featured as much as on his other cds but there is still sitar present and on a couple of tracks (Friar Park & West Eats Meat) it is very effective and works brilliantly with the accompanying instruments. Listen to the bass and sitar on West eats Meat for example...it grooves (for want of a better phrase). A couple of tracks feature vocals.
