The finest version is probably the Davis' version in the Philip's complete operas set. The main attraction for Berlioz lovers is probably, however, John Eliot Gardiner's presentation of the complete Irlande song cycle. For reasons that I really cannot fathom, this is something of a rarity. Whilst it isn't hard to get hold of this or that song from Irlande, this is, as far as I'm aware, the only complete recording of all nine songs ever generally released on CD. Fortunately it's a damn fine recording. Unfortanately this set appears to have been discontinued. It's worth hunting up used copies. As well ... Read More: |
