from: Great Pianists of the 20th Century
Release Date September 21, 1998
One of a hundred two-disc sets in Philips' 'Great Pianists' series, this edition succintly captures Perahia's artistry through a broad range of repertoire. The set begins with two extremely fine Scarlatti sonatas, the first wistful, the second effervescent. The latter sparkles brilliantly without being dry: both sonatas demonstrate Perahia's pre-occupation with melodic line and beauty of sound, and whilst this is clear throughout the set, it is never more evident than in these beautiful and pianistic renditions of works more often heard on the percussive harpsichord.
Perahia's concern with melody and sound is most effective in his Schubert and Mozart. The latter is represented in the set by the C major ... Read More:

If there were anyway that you could think of to sell a classical guitar C.D, the best idea would be to fill it with the well-known classics that will be sure sellers. Julian Bream knows this (or maybe just the producers do?) and he has put the two most exhilarating concertos for guitar (in my opinion) on one C.D. Malcolm Arnold is a great and masterful composer. This concerto shows off his precise orchestration, distinct knowledge of each instrument in the orchestra (and the guitar too I suppose) and his wonderful melody writing. This is quite a challenge for any guitarist (esp. the second movement!) and for the musical listeners, it's one of those pieces of music that even people that don't normally listen to classical music would enjoy. This set is beautifully balanced, and the recordings from 1960s, digitalised for this edition are excellent. Her playing is poetic and superbly "Mozartian" without either idiosyncratic personal liberties or excessive tempi. She clearly has great understanding of this music, and with the help of LSO and Rowicki, Davis and Galliera brings out the full romantic range of Mozart with wonderful colour and excitement - this is no superficial, showy, modern rendition, but sensitively true to what the composer wrote. The inclusion of the concertos for 2 and 3 pianos are an interesting bonus.
Little appreciated in his day, French composer Hector Berlioz is now widely recognized as one of the major contributors to the music of the Romantic era and his works are a regular feature of today's concert programs.
Of his relatively modest output of 124 works, many of which are songs for solo voice or piano, the four symphonies are probably his most dramatic and significant compositions. Three of these are played in full on this double CD.
`Harold en Italie', a five movement work, was partly inspired by what Berlioz describes as `a man with long hair and piercing eyes and a strange ravaged countenance, a creature haunted by genius'. This was in fact the violinist Paganini who asked Berlioz to compose an orchestral ... Read More:
