It has to be tough for slayer. This is the band who defined what a certain brand of metal sounded like, even what it could sound like. Reign in Blood was the record I wanted to hear in 1986. It was the yard stick by which I measured not just metal, but all extreme/noise music. I spent years trying to find another record that would give me that same hit. Now here is that record.
Nothing inbetween has offered that same visceral brutality. Like Reign in Blood this is an album that takes my breath away, I find myself listening to a track, then replaying it, just to relive the sensation. It somehow leaves me feeling clean, in the same way that you feel purged after a fist fight, not clever, but in touch with something elemental.

This is a selection of early Morbid Angel recordings. Some of the tracks appear on Alters of Madness under different names or with different lyrics. There may even be an early version of something off Blessed are the sick (can't remember without listening to it due to the name change!). As you'd expect for a bunch of tracks unearthed from demo tapes and the like, the sound quality isn't exactly top notch. Over all it's worth a listen and worth buying if you're a big Morbid Angel fan, but newcomers might prefer to try Alters or Blessed.

I want to get something clear here, The detractors argue that this is Slayers "slow" album, have they not heard Seasons in the Abyss? This album is not as slow as people make it out to be.
My fave Slayer album, yes, not every song burns at 1000rpm like RiB but it shows that Slayer were prepared to branch out and I'm so glad they did, this album is an absolute classic! South of Heaven the song is one of the greatest openers to any album in any genre, I love how it fades into Silent Scream which is probibly the only weak track on the cd.
Everything else is pure gold, Everything from Behind... to Spill the blood is perfect, Slayer crafted a brutal thrash album thats also hints very very slightly at melody, which is no bad thing, Toms ... Read More:

Having given up on their attempt to become the fastest and most technical death metal band in the world, (something they were never going to achieve once the likes of Suffocation arrived on the scene and moved the goalposts), Deicide returned to the habit of writing hook-filled songs with recognisable verses and choruses for their 3rd album Once Upon the Cross. With noticeably more standout guitar riffs than on their previous 2 albums, Once Upon the Cross sees the band hit a new high, with some classic catchy tracks like When Satan Rules His World and They Are The Children of the Underworld. The album is also noteworthy for its cover artwork, which in true old school Cannibal Corpse fashion was deemed so offensive by the record label that it had to be hidden ... Read More:

After becoming a star in his homeland of Sweden, many would have predicted that Peter Tatgren and his Hypocrisy buddies would soften under the inevitable commercial pressure. Wrong. Don't believe me? Just listen to this album. Simple as that. Not taking their cues from the previous years 'Hypocrisy' album, the band have returned to their original, more Death Metal sound which they utilised on their first few albums, instead of following the more slower, atmospherically-charged 'Hypocrisy'. 'Legions Descend' opens the album. And what an opener: blasting drums, screaming guitars, and Tagtren's vocals filled with venom. Also of note is that the band have returned to their more Satanic leanings of old, lyrically. When Tagtren screams, "Satan's victory ... Read More:

This is just about as good as death metal can ever get (short of Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse), the lyrics are suprisingly clear for a death metal album, this also means that they are catchy(only to a certain extent) and also you remember just small parts of songs, you remember one line that is really catchy and end up listening to and liking the whole album. The songs will at first sound slightly samey, there will be no obvious differences but once you get into the music you see diferences as clearly as ever. The songs have all have their own tempo and theme, however the theme throughout the album as with all Deicide is a clear and obvious pissed off at God feeling. This is an album that is the sound of a band at the peak of their career, this ... Read More:

Hypocrisy Were one of those bands that had it all. But due to the mass marketing of the death metal labels at exactly the time they released this debut, they never made the running. Maybe thats a bit harsh. They certainly carved out a name for themselves in the death metal circles of Europe, and to a small extent the US too. I suppose I really mean that they missed out on World wide success the likes of which Morbid Angel, Obituary and their ilk had already assured themselves of. Even Nuclear Blast had its own pet bands that it seemed to push more than the rest. Gorefest were probably the best example. And so this couldn't have been a great thing for Hypocrisy.
Which is a shame because Hypocrisy play damn fine death metal.
On its release I personally hadn't ... Read More:

I love Napalm, and this album is one of my favourites, mainly due to one track. - Contemptuous. Its a big nod to Mr Justin Broadrick and Godflesh.
Worth it for that alone, and also as a another fine jewel in the bands Grindcore genre defining crown.
