1995 was probably quite an intimidating time for Morbid Angel. The whole grunge/alt. rock thing was starting to really get into high gear. On the heavier side of music the word 'industrial' was starting to be mentioned in closer and closer circles to the mainstream. Extreme metal bands must have been wondering what, if anything the future held for them. This is somewhat evident on David Vincent's last studio album with the band and shows the only discernible signs of compromise in their long and eminent career.

Early stuff which stands out just as well as their later stuff,and for different reasons-A very raw sounding album which delivers that distinctive Satyicon feel that is theirs alone, yet is still true to the Norwegian Black Metal scene.Vikingland & Dominions of Satyricon stand out the most.A great Viking & Pagan sounding album ...class

I first encountered this opus at a time when I was both young and impressionable, and at that time I was completely oblivious to the fact that Venom had a wry sense of humour which permeated pretty much everything they did. Hence, the leather bound gatefold sleeve (complete with burning inverted crucifix), scant information on the band and general subject matter, had a fairly profound effect at the time - and that was before I'd actually dared to play the thing. Coupled with this was the general view that Venom were `the worst band in the World' and the sense of trepidation was intense. So how does it, and did it, sound? Fear Emptiness Despair

Genuinely, I mean that. This album is an absolute corker and the chap who stated that it was a 'failed experiment' clearly doesn't understand the band or the genre. Maybe he read somewhere that Napalm Death had a 'slump' and was trying to be clever with his review. Let me tell you, that comment was never levelled at this record. In fact, this is Napalm Death at their absolute peak and like the other 5 Star reviewer, I think this is their best album by a country mile.
Don't forget, this is the album which received a 5K review in Kerrang and got a 5 Star review in Raw (if anyone remembers that fine magazine!) upon its release.
So why is this such a great album??? - Firstly, its monsterously heavy, but it never descends into a noisy mess.

Vempire

Well, I think so anyway. I want everyone who likes metal to hear this album. Where to start?

This album sees COF at one of their two career peaks (the other being the ambitious and flawlessly executed epic Damnnation And A Day, 7 years later). Before Vempire there was The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, another one those records that 'purists' like to pretend they like even though anyone with ears can hear that its just a badly produced 50-odd minutes of nonsense with comedy keyboards and indecipherable vocals. Post-Vempire Cradle went a different direction, firstly with the slighty-TOO-gothic Dusk... Again cannibal corpse return, with a new bloadsoaked death metal blast. This band are brutal, but if you're reading this then i guess you already know this. Basically, in their 15 years of exisistence, the 'corpse have not seen fit to change their (admittedly winning) formula one jot. I suggest you pick up "tomb of the mutilated" cause that is one sick puppy of an album. If you dig that, then its likely you'll ripping it up to to this one, but I think it's only fair to say this is just more of the same!

I have been a Satyricon fan for about almost two years now, i got into them through a magazine giving the album 'Now Diabolical' a 5 star rating. I checked it out. . . Next thing i know im going to see them live and this album was swiftly in my hands, after buying the rest of there albums i listened to them all thoroughly. This album has to be my favourite album in the entire world. I would reccommend this album to any metal fan, whether or not you like black metal. I wouldnt even say this album was black metal, this album was the bridge between there new sound and there old sound. Elitists may think that they have betrayed the original sounds of black metal but i say if there making albums as good as this one then they can carry on for all I care. Constant double bass ... God Hates Us All

It has to be tough for slayer. This is the band who defined what a certain brand of metal sounded like, even what it could sound like. Reign in Blood was the record I wanted to hear in 1986. It was the yard stick by which I measured not just metal, but all extreme/noise music. I spent years trying to find another record that would give me that same hit. Now here is that record.

Nothing inbetween has offered that same visceral brutality. Like Reign in Blood this is an album that takes my breath away, I find myself listening to a track, then replaying it, just to relive the sensation. It somehow leaves me feeling clean, in the same way that you feel purged after a fist fight, not clever, but in touch with something elemental.

Leaders Not Followers Vol.1

This CD is an excellent filler, and gives an ideal insight into the band members lives as tape-traders. I'm not usually a hardcore fan, but Politicians and Nazi Punks are both excellent here. The track by Slaughter showcases how funny they were, and how innovative they were at the same time. The Pentagram track makes you wonder why you can't find an album by them anywhere, it's so good. Personally I'm a big fan of Death's and this shows the band in their formative stages, with an excellently done song again, simple but effective. I love Repulsion too, and Maggots In Your Coffin is as good a cover as Horrified was, when done by Mortician, but you can actually hear it this time!

Overall a good chance to hear what Napalm like, and how good they are at covers...
