In the past few months, Hypocrisy seem to have had a lot more media interest thrown their way,ever since blowing Dimmu borgir off stage in london, seems to have increased thier profile, at least to these eyes anyway,but with now nine studio albums into their career, this could be seen as a tad late!. still, it only makes "The Arrival" seem like a sensible direction to go in, after years developing their sound through their studio work, they have become a band that could easily fit any metal bill and as a result of their desire to keep pushing their sound in different directions, they have never sounded dated or tired. Butchered at Birth (Digipak)

Cannibal Corpse are routinely derided by Death Metal snobs, but the fact remains that their first 4 albums are classics of the genre.

'Butchered At Birth' is their 1991 sophomore release and still sounds supremely brutal: the music has a distinctly claustrophobic feel, the sick guitar tone is strangely dry (yet suffocatingly brutal) and because it lacks a deep bass sound allows the ugliness of Chris Barnes' vocals to shine through ... or at least gargle up from the gutter!

In my opinion this is one of Barnes' best vocal performances, along with that of 'The Bleeding' and 'True Carnage' (with Six Feet Under).

Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced from Within

Extreme in their construction, clinical in their execution. Long Island's Suffocation reached for unimaginable states of technical death metal ecstacy. Their a heavy kinda band from Long Island, a bit like V.O.D. Both their albums "Effigy of the Forgotten" & "Pierced From Within" are two great CD's, for a part in Roadrunner Records ongoing Two From the Vault series.

Let's just focus on them on, hmmm?

What is there to say. If you have heard Obituary before, then you know what to expect (to a degree). If you haven't and are considering trying them out, then do so right now! These boys know the meaning of death metal and execute it to perfection time and again.

This two from the vault version is great because you get two doses of Obituary in one foul swoop. As for the content, lets just say that John Tardy has the ability to churn out the most powerful vocals of any metal group, accompanied by suitably hideous guttural noises which compliment this type of power. Also, the sound of the guitars is totally evil, how Allan West manages to create such melodic yet gut wrenching riffs and solos is beyond me! And the drums, well you need to be a little ... Death Church

Now without trying to sound big or clever, I am a big fan of Rudimentary PEni, and this album is most commonly addressed or put across as their greatest, while I agree it fully deseves 4/5 stars, its a little different from their other work, let me elaborate.

Their two earlier eps, the Rudimentary Peni ep and the Farce ep are fast paced and contain some of my favourite tracks, this album comes after these two and is still in the same vein, however the riffs are slower, and the lyrics still as sharp as a knife and as hard hitting as a hammer (resulting in a knifammer), partly due to the lead singer (Nick Blinko) and also due to the music of the songs which greatly contrasts this.

This ain't really my thing I'm more into bands like converge or dillinger escape plan but a lot of my friends were going on and on about this 'melodic death' thing and eventually I decided to get me some. Everyone recommended Clayman by In Flames. I got it and was quite disappointed it was all soft dribble and very un-death. So I took it back and got this instead. This was definitely more what I was looking for. Its got some harrowing melodies but without compromising the overall intensity. Its cool coz songs like terminal spirit disease and the beautiful wound show that, as well as going for all out thrash, At The Gates also have a fantastic sense of groove as well
