Soft spot for this compilation, it being my first ever thrash album (back in 86, I bought it on cassette - can still see the cover with Cronos!)
It's pretty crude by todays standards - little in common with the Black Metal acts that followed; no keyboards, the satanic lyrics are often slightly tongue in cheek, and there isn't the icy cold feeling of the likes of Emperor or Dimmu Borgir! Not to mention technical ability!
What you do have is a set of songs that are catchy with conventional structures that are more Punk Metal than anything else. The youth of today, raised on Satyricon & Immortal will find this fairly tame & a little shoddy, but back in it's day, it was fast & nasty! And it persuaded me to buy Master Of Puppets.... ... Having peaked with their 2nd album ‘Cause of Death’ Obituary have spent the rest of their career releasing albums that just come up short of their past glories. The bands 3rd album ‘The End Complete’ is pretty much sonically identical to the last album, with only the slightly more punchy drum sound separating the two, so inevitably the album suffers a little from failing to take the band anywhere new, though to be fair to them this album is probably the closest they ever came to equalling the mighty ‘Cause of Death’, and still easily warrants a five star rating in it’s own right. There are no real fillers on the album, and some of the riffs rank amongst the best they have ever come up with (such as the lurching stop ... Read More:

To me after almost a decade without hearing a single song by Morbid Angel when I stumbled upon them again at the release of the new album Heretic they sounded stronger and more guttural than ever. Heretic was also something of a test for me as it was the first time I had ever heard them with Steve Tucker filling the colossal shoes David Vincent. Although from the outset his inferior diction and more limited range of vocal techniques doom him to failure this album is none the less a testimony to Morbid Angel's continual evolution and ongoing development.
In some senses heretic is a step backwards. Gone is the glossy, fat Morrisound Studios production that graced every one of their previous albums. And ushered in is a raw, tightly rehearsed, guitar dominated ... Read More:

This truly is amazing stuff. Moonspell had long been classed as the band to listen to if you are into philosophical lyrics and deep, meaningful music, but this went above and beyond anything Moonspell fans could have hoped for.
1. Perverse... Almost Religious - A dramatic instumental intro. A taste of things to come... 2. Opium - A song based on Fernando Pessoa's Opiário poem. The first and only single from Irreligious. Great lyrics. Very hard to get out of your head. 3. Awake! - An unsettling piece of music with a dark chorus. 4. A Taste of Eternity - A downright aggresive song from the start. Very heavy and with a clear lyrical message. 5. Ruin & Misery - "Another name for Love and another name for death". This is an amazing song. 6. A ... Read More:

from cradle to enslave is an ep that in some ways could be deemed as a single as it contains two new tracks, album opener from the cradle to enslave and of dark blood and fxxking which are why this ep gets three stars,as they are blinding and pretty much essential cradle classics, filled with melody, spite, rage and classic stylish sounds. The cover version of the misfits death comes ripping is great but cant better the original so its inclusion is somewhat in vain in that respect.
sleepless is an anathema cover and again doesnt quite deliver the goods if im honest, then we get a remix of from the cradle to enslave which is hideous, shocking and makes me ill, whats the point of this dance nonsense,i wish i knew.then we get a remix of funeral in carpathia which is pretty poor yet ... Feasting the Beast is a collection of 2 demo's recorded by Deicide back when they went under the name of Amon, one from 1989 and the other from 1987. While the band may have changed their name for their debut album however, their early music is a crushing as ever. The 1989 demo is basically a pre-production run-through of 6 tracks from their debut album, with this recording being instrumental in the band getting signed to Roadrunner. Seeing as the songs were recorded by Scott Burns at the legendary Morrissound studio the tracks aren't that different from the versions that ended up on the album - maybe slightly rawer, with Benton's vocals being even more aggressive if possible. The 3 songs (+ intro) from 1987 may sound more basic, but for all that this is still great primitive ... Read More:
