Supermodified

Laterally, 'Supermodified' is a mood piece, sound-scapes etc, but as a concept, I'm afraid it's off the rails. It doesn't draw the line, it's in over it's head - I get a disturbing feeling that it's something to be scared of.
The road Amon Tobin is walking, isn't gonna lead anywhere good.
'Supermodified' is extremely corrupt. Full of decadent ideas and whims all crammed up against each other like lemmings. It conjures up areas of mystery and sultry dynamics, readily striking maddening chords in reviewers, like yours truly, who vociferously decry 'rock' in all it's insidious forms, but hypocritically embrace it's very fundamentals at every opportunity.

If there was a 'problem' with the original New Forms it was that although it opened a lot of new doors for the drum'n'bassy side of electronic music, it rarely if ever broke out into full-on actual drum'n'bass. It was more jazzy and abstract, often having stretches of build up that would lead into more build up, then kind of nothing... These new 're-licks' are effectively VIP remixes of the originals and they all sound designed for the dancefloor, rather than the headphones/beard-stroking room. For example 'Brown Paper Bag' is transformed from a monolithic 9-minute prog-jazz freakout, to 4 minutes of punchy jump-up (complete with an MC), but it still retains its weird, dark edginess. To be honest cd2 of this compilation is the only one i really to listen too, theres a few scattered bangers on the other 2 cds but way to much filler! Also what is hype doing with the delay effect on his mixer? He needs to sort that out big style because its ruined many of the tracks for example dillinja's in the grind - i cringe every time I hear it! There are though, on the other hand some excellent bits of mixing, like when he brings in tink ya bad from now its over - SIK! If you can find it for under a tenner than get it but otherwise sorry dj hype, must try harder

Big Bud has long been a superb technician who knows how to blend those hypnotic drum sounds and lush deep reggae piano stabs into a truly sublime and inspiring double album. Billion Dollar Gravy is flawless example of the reasons why drum and bass music stays afloat. When the forces of chaos try to shake the foundations of electronic music, rest assured that these guys will still be in the studio putting their heads together. This album is an ode to their professionalsim as both live performers and studio heroes.
This is s prime portion of rolling, jazz-tigned drum and bass with some glorious vocals thrown in for good measure. You c wake up to this album, drive your car to it or even just walk about town to it, but whatever you do, you'll do it twice as fast!
Technically the prodction is up there with High Contrast and the forgotten heroes of the moving shadow records crew (Who really started this movement). Uplifting and inspirational.

I have read a few not so good reviews, now. I would consider myself an all round music fanatic e.g. Soul, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Hip-Hop, Break Beats, ect. I only listen to music that I think is really well made or really personal, Not cheesy quick produced rubbish like Hardcore or alot of some hard dance produced now a days. I will admit a good tune when I hear it though. If you like good drum and bass and you hear a good track, well imagen lots of amazing tracks squeezed into 1 album. Soundz good then try this. If you are a drum and bass fan then it's a must, for true fanz that is.

When I first heard this CD, I really wasn't sure what to think. It was too quirky, too odd, too dark. I gave it a second chance and realised how much I'd missed first time round. The Nina Simone remix on its own is awesome, but there's plenty more hanging around it. I think the problem I found was that I don't think Lamb go 'Back To Theirs' to unwind, but to continue a party, in a laid back sort of way. On the third listen, I had a little bug in my legs, by the fourth I was gliding round the house. Enjoy
