American reggae label Heartbeat have been licensing Studio One material for 20 years or more now and since the death of Studio One's founder Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in 2004 have been more active in this area than they had been for a while, issuing both new collections and revamped/remastered versions of old ones. The contents of this box set (actually 4 CDs in a cardboard box, with 3 of them available separately, rather than a proper box set) fall into the latter category, with the first 3 CDs representing revised and expanded versions of compilations that first came out in the 1980s. The fourth disc contains extended mixes of some of the tracks on the first three, previously only available on the double lp versions of these albums; while these ... Read More:

This is a great album! and lets remember that this is the debut recording of Junior Reid as lead vocalist after Michael Rose departed from the group which some speculate a dispute between him and Duckie Simpson who discovered the band with Don Carlos and Garth Dennis.Anyway back to this classic debut as Black Uhuru is led by yet another lead vocalist and what a performance by JR.Reid.This album contains quality tracks like "Brutal,Great Train Robbery,Dread in the Mountain,Fit you Haffe Fit" just to add a few.So after you have been blown away with such strong lyrics and catchy rythems you then get a treat of the equally strong dubs which are top notch.
Fantastic all round why? well first of all the material that is presented on the this ... Read More:

I bought this cd because I wanted to know more about this genre called'Dub'. From what I had heard, it was a kind of Reggae and there is somethingspecial about it. It gives inspiration to modern urban music such as Drum& Bass, I would hear people describe certain D&B tunes as 'Dubby' and Iwould have no idea what they meant. King Tubby was reccomended by the BBC,so I had to check this out. After putting in the cd, the first thing that hit me was the loudness andclarity, Tubbys tunes are well engineered and louder than your averagetune, there is big emphasis on the bass which is very powerful. The tunesare mainly instrumental and use plenty of special effects, the mostnotable one being echo or 'delay', which has to be heard to bebelieved. Read More:

Apart from some upbeat ska instrumentals, much of this isn't as fun as the more recent 'Dynamite!' and is more apt for the muso. However it's still great reggae.

This remastered compilation features previously issued dub versions of classic Tuff Gong and Lee Perry productions of the Wailers. These are good early dubs from 1971-72 in excellent audio, before King Tubby's heyday. This means they sound more as instrumental dub and are a great showcase of the rhythm section of Familyman on bass and Carlie Barrett on drums. Extra delight comes from the few tracks with horns by Tommy McCook and the fragmented vocals by Bob, Peter and Bunny. The never before issued track Nice time version is interesting for its historical value.

this album is great. from the first 5 seconds of 'image dub' you know how brilliant and laid back its going to be.
the real shiner for me is track 5 - higher heights dub. the bassline in this song is just trully amazing. of course, that also describes the rest of this essential dub album.
