With Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong both performing at the peak of their careers, and with "backup" played by Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson, the listener can enjoy seven of the greats of jazz, all having fun on the same album. Recorded between 1956-57 and digitally remastered in 1988, Ella's voice is bright, clear, and smooth, able to respond to whatever demands Ella makes of it, while Louis's is growly, gravelly, and operating at its limits. They provide a wonderful counterpoint to each other, while their accompanying musicians add color and a lively swing beat. But then, with stars like these, how can you lose?

This set of CDs comes from Italy - and typically of the Gold Collection series there are no liner notes: the booklet simply lists the tunes as they appear on the case and the cardboard slip-cover but with the addition of the writers' names and duration of each track.
There are 40 tracks altogether (although not all of them are listed above) and a total of just over 2 hours' playing time.
The lack of notes is frustrating; the many vocalists are not identified (although Bing Crosby is instantly recognisable), none of the musicians are named, or the date of recording.
The sound quality varies. Many of the (presumably) earlier tracks are muffled, some sound as if they are being played through a gramophone horn, and several have ... Read More:

The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.
One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther ... Read More:
