Louis Armstrong has a stronger claim than anyone else to be considered the most important and influential figure in 20th century popular music (and he conveniently claimed to be, or believed he was, born in 1900). To put it as simply as possible: no Louis Armstrong, no popular singing as we know it. His work spans five decades, but rather than opt for a CD that takes in a bit of everything, I'd recommend this compilation, mostly from 1956-57, on Norman Granz's Verve Records. Why? because the early stuff, with his studio-assembled groups in the 1920s, is more for for the jazz buff - more instrumental than vocal - and although I like his big band stuff in the 1930s it's hit-and-miss in terms of the material recorded.
