In an era when music is often reduced to the lowest common denominator, it's great to listen to musicians who seem to enjoy playing and consequently put their heart and soul into it. Whatever your taste, there is something here for you: there's the foot-stomping "Gettysburg March" (three different versions!) and the more reflective "Lord, Lord, Lord, You Sure Been Good To Me". One is soon caught up in the mood created by fine musicians whose range covers spiritual hymns such as "Walking With The King" to the secular "Savoy Blues". I love every one of the sixteen tracks. Sit back, enjoy and marvel!

Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson was in his 60s when he cut this album for Bluesville in July, 1961 (all in a single day, actually). But you wouldn't know from listening to his smooth, dextrous guitar playing and expressive voice that one of the blues' greatest stars of the 20s and 30s had spent a decade working minimum-wage jobs...he was a janitor in Philadelphia when music journalist and ocational producer Chris Albertson became aware of him.
Here he performs nine pleasant, low-key solo numbers and two duets with old friend Victoria Spivey (they first recorded together in the 20s). Spivey also gets a solo performance, singing and playing piano on the slow "I Got The Blues So Bad", but this is mostly Lonnie Johnson's show. He is accompanied ... Read More:

Previous reviewers have already said everything that needs to be said, so I'll keep this short. This is a small group recording with Jo Jones on drums Les Spann on Guitar, Johnny Hodges on Alto Sax and Harry Edison on Trumpet.
None of the tracks are Ellington tunes, which is very unusual. When Ellington plays these tunes they begin to sound like he wrote them. In this case its probably because they are all blues. With a talent as great as Ellington's you quickly put your mark on the music. All the musicians play beautifully. This isn't a wild jam session, so whilst there certainly are sparks they are of a more subtle nature.
If you want to hear more of Ellington's under-rated Piano playing I strongly recommend "Piano ... Read More:
