LL recorded for two years and made three albums worth of music before he released this. Prior to this release he put out a promotional mix tape which can be downloaded free from the web. Just google 'Return Of The Goat LL'. That mix tape was amazing and I played it all day every day. It could have - "correction" it should have been the CD. I would guess the tracks which didn't make Exit 13 were on the mix tape. The mix tape re-instates him as the GOAT. Exit 13 doesn't.
I heard he reads some of his reviews because this one is real. I've watched LL very closely since 1985, seen his tours, bought all the vinyl and cds and I have to say his skills, and talent is flawless. 25 years in this industry speaks for itself. However the production ... Read More:

Whilst the other tracks are far from fillers, this debut album is allabout 'Public Enemy #1' which established the atonal sound of laterclassics such as 'Welcome to the Terrordome' with it's funk/jazz guitarquick stabs rather than longer, melodic riffs.

Love this album. Heard it for the first time when I was 16, I'm 24 now and still love it. It's a huge shame they haven't really done anything together since then but anybody who calls themselves a true hiphop fan and doesn't have this album is not yet bonafide!

This is another one of these albums which is rated as an all-time classic, then you listen to it, and wonder what all the fuss is about. Paid In Full isnt even a proper album- its just a collection of singles with some cuts of beats'n'scratches by Eric B to pad it out. There's a few great tracks here- I Know You Got Soul is clearly one of THE classic hip-hop tracks of the era, and Move the Crowd is equally good (although there's a better mix on "Hip Hop Don't Stop vol.2"). The title track's also pretty cool. Otherwise, there's not much else here to justify the album's reputation. Rakim's delivery is smooth, but his lyrics aren't too hot- I'll bet Chuck D wouldn't come up with rhymes like
"Fish/is my favourite dish/but without my money its ... Read More:

For his second album, It Was Written, Nas hired a bunch of hip-hop's biggest producers -- including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch, and Trackmasters -- to help him create the musical bed for his daring, groundbreaking rhymes. Although that rhyme style isn't as startling on It Was Written as it was on his debut, Illmatic, Nas has deepened his talents, creating a complex series of rhymes that not only flow, but manage to tell coherent stories as well. Furthermore, Nas often concentrates on creating vignettes about life in the ghetto that never are apolitical or ambivalent. This time around, the production is more detailed and elaborate, which gives the music a wider appeal. Sometimes this is a detriment -- Nas sounds better when he tries to keep it street-level - ... This album has you in two minds. The first time I listened to it I thought it was o.k but nothing special. But after a few listens, it just gets to you. Its hard to explain but you will like it more on the 2nd or 3rd listen. Some of the beats are crazy and untouchable. R.I.P ODB.

For me, this is Tribe's masterpiece... an album of such pure quality that is dazzles to this day. In fact, in comparison to the bulk of today's heavily marketed, over-produced, incoherent Hip Hop albums, it deserves a 6th star. It's takes the form of a trip through after-hours New York, with a computerised voice as your tour guide. The basslines on this album are amazing, and perhaps this album should have been called the Low End Theory Part 2, as ATCQ revisit the formula of samples and snares. The music influences as always, veer from Jazz to Soul, but always remain resolutely Hip Hop and resolutely fresh. There aren't a plethora of guest spots by the latest 'Hot' rappers, just a verse from Large Professor and a chorus from Busta Rhymes (from when he was A Leader Of The New School, ... Read More:
