This is a hip-hop masterpeice by Talib Kweli. He is a master of his craft and has produced a slick and intelligent album. My personal favourite tracks are Love Language & Good Mourning but almost every track is a joy to listen to.
If you enjoy genuine hip-hop, get this album. If you are new to hip-hop, get this album. If you enjoy music in all its beautiful forms, get this album.

I was very impressed by the first two volumes in the series but this volume, while it has some great tracks, does not match those two although I like this set better now than when I first bought it some years ago.
The highlights for me are I saw three ships (Sting), Blue Christmas (Sheryl Crow), Christmas (Blues traveller), a Gallic version of Silent night (Enya), Santa Claus is back in town (Jonny Lang), Christmas is now drawing near at hand (Steve Winwood) and O holy night (Tracy Chapman). Most of the other tracks are OK but the version of Santa baby included here is definitely not my kind of music. I much prefer Madonna's version, to be found on the first volume in the series, or the original Eartha Kitt version from the fifties. Read More:

No doubt premier was the star of gangstar his production on step in the arena is top quality. He's years ahead of his time, and his trademark heavy scratching never grows old. However, guru is often underated he's an intellect and in my opinion his monotonal rap works well by not drawing attention away from the work of premier. This album was a much needed change from the played-out gangsta rap of this era.

Yet another superb collection from the Sessions people.
Smooth grooves from Tone Loc, Def Jef and Spoonie Gee mixed with harder numbers from KRS-One, Ultramagnetics etc. An excellent compilation of premier cuts from the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Worth buying alone for JVC Force's Strong Island.
When the stores are full of tired Old School compilations do yourself a favour and buy this instead. Great Tunes from back in the day before gangsta came along and made Rap the boring genre it sadly is today.

For his second album, It Was Written, Nas hired a bunch of hip-hop's biggest producers -- including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch, and Trackmasters -- to help him create the musical bed for his daring, groundbreaking rhymes. Although that rhyme style isn't as startling on It Was Written as it was on his debut, Illmatic, Nas has deepened his talents, creating a complex series of rhymes that not only flow, but manage to tell coherent stories as well. Furthermore, Nas often concentrates on creating vignettes about life in the ghetto that never are apolitical or ambivalent. This time around, the production is more detailed and elaborate, which gives the music a wider appeal. Sometimes this is a detriment -- Nas sounds better when he tries to keep it street ... For me, this is Tribe's masterpiece... an album of such pure quality that is dazzles to this day. In fact, in comparison to the bulk of today's heavily marketed, over-produced, incoherent Hip Hop albums, it deserves a 6th star. It's takes the form of a trip through after-hours New York, with a computerised voice as your tour guide. The basslines on this album are amazing, and perhaps this album should have been called the Low End Theory Part 2, as ATCQ revisit the formula of samples and snares. The music influences as always, veer from Jazz to Soul, but always remain resolutely Hip Hop and resolutely fresh. There aren't a plethora of guest spots by the latest 'Hot' rappers, just a verse from Large Professor and a chorus from Busta Rhymes (from when he was ... Read More:

I got this album for "Locked Up" which had firmly lodged in my musical memory since its release. At first listening I didn't think much of the rest of the album, but in fact it grows on you. i can't say I think much about the people favourite Bananza, but a lot of other tracks have interesting elements, such as: Trouble Nobody, Gangsta (with a really cool simulated female voicing leitmotif which, for me, should appear more frequently in the track), Ghetto and Lonely, while the rest of the tracks are not bad. The Locked Up remix is all the money. I wanted to give this 3.75 stars, but since most other reviewers have overvalued it, I gave it 3 as a balancing act. Don't get me wrong, as I said, it does grow on you, but at the same time, it ain't Tupac, Public ... Read More:

This album has you in two minds. The first time I listened to it I thought it was o.k but nothing special. But after a few listens, it just gets to you. Its hard to explain but you will like it more on the 2nd or 3rd listen. Some of the beats are crazy and untouchable. R.I.P ODB.

compared to i am and nastradamus, this is a step ahead- compared to illmatic and some moments of it was written, still wack.
