This soundtrack is certainly a popular one today but in my opinion, highly overrated. When I saw the movie, I thought that the hobbit music was a standout but remembered little else and the same is true for the CD. It excels in atmosphere and size but (apart from the hobbit music) has very little character; something that I feel is essential in a soundtrack of this sort. If you're hoping to hear the 'Ring Theme' (which is repeated over and over in the first film), it appears only once on the CD and the Nazgul music is a little dominating and repetitive for just one disc (even though the choir does send a nice shiver down the spine). The best thing about this soundtrack is the fact it has given Howard Shore's profile a much-needed push and I ... Read More:

Since 1973, Bette Midler has been recording ballads to rockers, show tunes to star standards. She has interpreted some of the best versions of American pop and has crafted some lesser known songs into her own. Her checkerboard singles chart history has only warranted this one and only collection of Greatest Hits. However, it does not scan all of her hits! I hope that someday, this superstar has a box set of single mixes (Chapel Of Love, Married Men), 12" mixes (Strangers In The Night, Moonlight Dancing) and rare b-sides (Samedi Et Vendredi, Bang You're Dead)(to name a few) collection.
This set includes her mega hit classics The Rose to From A Distance, to the lesser known concert favorites Hello In There to Miss Otis Regrets.

I guess 'Grease' really sums up Olivia's contribution to the pop scene - cool, calm and collected as the country girl with the silky voice, with tracks like 'Sam', 'I Honestly Love You', 'A Little More Love', 'Deeper than the Night', 'Take Me Home'......et al. Middle road with the early tracks in Grease....., progressing to the 'chick' at the end, with 'You're the One that I Want'! A dynamic image change from 'Sandra Dee' to Pink Lady, 'Sandie'!
This CD is a mix of the lively and the lovely, with the lyrics to 'Banks of the Ohio', surprising the odd new listener! Our personal favourites are:- 'Magic', 'Xanadu', 'Physical', 'Heart Attack' and 'Long Live Love'. Personally we would have omitted the 'Grease Megamix' at the end ... Read More:

I got this CD as a present to myself, but I've hardly seen it! Everyone has wanted to borrow it! Get yer own!!
The best song by far is the one about digging the 'ole in the ground. But all of his songs have you chuckling to yourself and singing them all day long...
Fans of Sarah Brightman have expressed mixed opinions on this `Best Of' release.
Being labeled as a `crossover' artist I think can be a burden, for there are times when he/she will perform opera and classical music but get criticized by the `classical buffs' for trying to step on the toes of their treasured elitist professional musicians of the classical world.
Then there is the criticism from fans of `popular music', who see their idol apparently deserting their pop roots and alienating themselves by joining the orchestral high society club.
So when pop meets classical is there always friction?
No, I don't side with either of these views, for I believe everyone is free to sing anything they like. Whether ... Read More:

I approached this CD with caution given the hype that has surrounded recent appearances of both singers. I must confess that contrary to my expectations I was deeply moved by the singing here which recalls other great operatic couples of the past, Callas and di Stefano, Tebaldi and del Monaco. The recording has rarely been far from my CD player for the past two weeks.
As with the legendary couples from the past, there is something uneven about the two voices. Netrebko's voice is not a warm voice but is beautifully focused, always on the note and has to my ears a dark unjuicy quality. It is a stunning voice. Villazon, by contrast, has a voice that could hardly be described as beautiful the way that Corelli's, Pavarotti's or Domingo's undoubtedly could. It does ... Read More:

In a recent BBC3 "CD Review" broadcast, Alexandra Wilson made a gallant attempt to achieve the impossible task of choosing amongst forty or so recordings of "La Boheme" - and while I agreed with her ultimate choice of the Beecham recording with Bjorling, Merrill and De Los Angeles, I have rather more regard for this discarded Karajan recording simply because Pavarotti's voice, in its prime, as she herself put it, "runs through the recording like a golden seam". The rest of the cast is wonderful, too, although Karajan's love for the score is manifested in a rather deliberately "beautiful" approach and thereby slightly undercuts the drama. I cannot be without either recording of this eternally youthful and moving opera, and although Freni was captured in slightly fresher, more ... Read More:

I have been picking up pieces of Jenkins' pieces for a while now but i must say that for anyone new to his work or just interested in hearing some really great music then this album hits the spot. A good collection of many highlights. I recommend it as a great general listening piece and thoroughly worth buying just for adiemus alone! Super!
