This is Neil Diamond's last great album, possibly his greatest. After this record, his stage persona would unfortunately take precedence and the genius songwriting became secondary to the performance and image of showman Neil Diamond. But these eight songs see Neil climax on a high. This is Neil's most spiritually potent album, with almost every track emanting a life-affirming, profound vitality. I've Been This Way Before, Lady Magdelene, Rosemary's Wine and The Last Picasso are beyond criticism - superb songs shimmering with the holy spirit and sung and played to perfection. Oh George, I do love you. This is a fabulous, fantastic, wonderful album. It is full of milestone music, things that relate to various stages in my life. There are so many tracks that have such relevance for me, A Different Corner, You have been Loved, Jesus to a Child, Father Figure, Somebody to Love, to name just a few! There are no disappointing tracks on this album, nothing that I don't like, just sheer quality, perfect music and vocals. I love One More Try, it moves me to tears, in fact, I love EVERYTHING. I think that George Michael is a true genius, a true performer, a true Magician. He can make music do so many things, make you laugh, make you dance, make you cry, make you sing. It's just perfect. Like George.

Everybody who was around in the sixties, seventies and eighties in the UK remembers who Val Doonican was - he was a regular on TV, usually hosting his own show in which he would always sing at least one song, often sitting in a rocking chair. But before he established himself as a TV host, he was a singer with a string of UK hits - three top three hits, two other top ten hits, three that came close to the top ten and six minor hits. Ballads were his stock-in-trade but he was not limited to them as he sometimes recorded up-tempo or mid-tempo songs. When I think of Neil Diamond and his music, this is how I like to remember him. This is absolutely superb. Not only is it littered with quality material, it also formed the bedrock of a lot of his songs that became the framework of his stunning live show on "Hot August Night", another must have.

The album is essentially split into two. The first half is a collection of some of his most inspired offerings to date. All 5 tracks are excellent. Why doesn't he play songs like "Coldwater Morning" more often - if at all? As previously mentioned in another review here, there is a wealth of material available to do an alternative show including such gems as this.

48 minutes of glorious Dresden Dolls madness. An excellent selection of songs with intriguing lyrics - the punk cabaret is growing up but it's still there with its tongue firmly in its cheek and a glint in its eye.

A few favourites:

'Dear Jenny' is a new song with the marvellous opening line of, 'Boys wear overcoats in the heat like this to keep themselves from showing..' - when was the last time you heard a song opening with a rationale for wearing a coat?

'The Mouse And The Model' is six minutes of glory for Brian going well overboard with his delicate and wild and careful drumming proving (if it's needed) what a great drummer he is.

Second Nature

I have grown to love Katherine Jenkins during the past few months for I think she is one of the best singers around at the moment.

I bought this CD for one reason, and one reason only, the track Vide Cor Meum. This duet was used in the film Hannibal, and also during the death scene of the Leper King Baldwin IV in the film Kingdom of Heaven. Here, Katherine sings the duet along with the Welsh singer Rhys Meiron. It is a divine work, beautifully played and sung.

But, to my absolute joy, I also discovered that this CD has numerous other wonderful tracks which are a joy to listen to. I loved it throughout, especially the tracks:

Time To Say Goodbye; O Sole Mio; Song To The Moon; and Mozart's little gem: Laudate Dominum.

The CD is a wondeful reminder of the beauty of Piafs singing, Cant wait for the DVD to come out if you can see ther Film It contains all the songs from the film except the French National Anthem sung while a child which I owuld have liked on there, there are many other titles that are not by Paif but nset the scene of her life.

No surprises on this album, but that's not always a bad thing. I picked this product because I wanted to listen to an album of recognisable songs, with a good singer and soothing melodies. And that's what you get. No silly cover versions of songs with Mathis trying to be hip, just sensible colloborations and really well, nice, songs.
