Finally, a CD I can drift off to sleep with! I've tried quite a few but they didn't help slow down my stressed out brain at night as this one does. The beautiful melodies on this CD have a lovely calming effect on my poor head sending me off to sleep feeling relaxed and happy. No jarring instruments and nothing too deep and moody, just gently played, lighthearted, tranquil melodies - works a treat!

OK, bad bit out of the way. We get 5 tracks from 'Amour' so, in fact, only 8 new tracks. (I wonder how they chose the 5 tracks to replicate?).
I found this disc both more satisfying and less so than Amour (I'm only talking about the new tracks here).
I would have bought this solely for the first track, `Der Holle Nacht', probably one of the (if not the) greatest dramatic soprano arias ever writen. I think Ms Marsh sings it well but the orchestra!!! I know the arrangement was for Euro 2008 but it really does not do either the music or her voice justice. For all that doesn't she sing well? Please, please, the second aria of the Queen on the next disc - PLEASE! - with Mozart's arrangement of course.
I was curiously unmoved ... Read More:

This is the soundtrack of one of the best and most memorable films I have seen this year. The CD is a wondeful reminder of the beauty of Piafs singing, Cant wait for the DVD to come out if you can see ther Film It contains all the songs from the film except the French National Anthem sung while a child which I owuld have liked on there, there are many other titles that are not by Paif but nset the scene of her life.

I will admit that when I first saw the track listing for this CD, I felt disappointed. "Come on!" I thought, "Katherine should be more original than this! Practically every soprano records 'O Mio Babbino Caro' at one point or another, and here are two common songs from the classical crossover genre, 'Nella Fantasia' and 'The Prayer'. Should I even invest in something that will only be a re-hash of things I have already heard many times?" In the end however, I decided that even with the unimaginative song selections, I would buy this CD.
I am very glad I did! There are so many gems here that I now consider this Katherine's best album. Surprisingly, "Nella Fantasia" instantly became a favorite of mine. Her rich, warm tones really brought ... Read More:
The budget price doesn't reflect the quality of this 2 disc collection of classical music highlights, for the soloists, orchestras, conductors and the recordings themselves ensure it is a good quality selection of mostly familiar music from the classical music repertoire.
The choices lean heavily towards the opera style, so for that reason alone will not be the only album necessary to cover everyone's taste - even the complete classical beginner will find many of their familiar favourites are absent.
The tracks are mostly single movements from the whole score, which may not please the more enthusiastic classical fan, but it's unavoidable given the short time permitted by only 2 CDs. In any case, this album really is only ... Read More:

I love Billie Holiday and have for a long time.
Her voice haunts my soul every time I hear it, it reminds me of the first time I heard it in a cafe in Soho London, time seem to stand still as she sang "Strange Fruit".
This box set is a perfect start to her music and you can see the all other music from jazz to hip hop flowing through it, if you have never heard her sing then I plead with you to buy this boxset and start a journey that will take you to new highs.
A good start to female jazz vocals and from the queen herself.

As I read the reviews from not only this wonderful CD but Eva's other ones I am struck by how unanimous the praise is for her. And then I look at the date of the reviews and I begin to worry and wonder. There does not seem to be any from the last five years. Right beside the reviews is an ad wondering what is wrong with young people who think Man Ray was a poisonous fish when he was an artist. Personally I think if Man Ray had thought about it he might have wanted to be Manta Ray as well. But I digress. Just as we are losing our capacity to recognize an artist who was working seventy years ago we are losing our ability to reach out to a recording artist who has been dead for only twelve years.
Surely there are younger listeners who are more concerned with quality ... Read More:

Though this is obviously a "cheapo" release with very sparse information about the tracks and the artist, it is actually a pretty well compiled CD of some of Hardy's best early recordings.
Containing most her of biggest hits like "Ce Petite Coeur", "Tous les Garcons et les Filles", "La Maison Ou J'Ai Grandi" and her only British top 20 hit-single "All Over the World", the CD gives a fine introduction to the most melodic and catchy side of Hardy.
A few harder to find tracks have also been included, among those English versions of some of her biggest hits in France.
For those who are not familar with Hardy's Vogue recordings or who just like intelligent 1960's pop, this CD is highly recommended.

I never thought I'd review a recording I first heard 52 years ago and first brought (when I finally had some money)42 years ago, but here goes.
Wee Small Hours is , as has been mentioned by previous reviewers the pinnacle of Sinatra's recorded work. His performing of what were mostly old songs in 1955, was entirely different to the treatment they had had before, and supremely better to what the same songs have had since. These are so heartbreakingly beautifully sung, and are so believable for those who have had their heart stomped on, that, half a century on they are painfully fresh.Still. Some things never change.
