Just a short review this time - I try my best never to have prior expectations about anything in life, especially music, thereby hoping that any disappointment is as justified as possible.
So, as a long time orbital fan, I was very disheartened when I heard the sound quality of the 2 audio CDs in this package. I cannot believe it was sanctioned for release, other than as a clever anti-piracy strategy....after all, who would want mp3s of poor quality audio sources ??? Just a thought....
The sound on the accompanying DVD is much better, almost perfect and has a nice balance of artist/crowd noise....reminiscent of the 3 Live EP/CD singles from 1996.
Also considering that some of (if not all - I cannot say ... Read More:

Every so often, an album of truly funky genius pops up and makes you want to write a movie just to set scenes to the songs. Unfortunately for anyone just arriving at the Propellerheads' seminal work, you've largely been beaten to it. Rarely a year goes by when there's no film released with at least a few bars from this album hidden away on it.
Where, to give just one example, would The Matrix have been without Spybreak to accompany the excellent `Government Lobby' scene?
This album shines from the opening bars of Take California, right through to the Jungle Brothers' remix of the same track (though cleverly renamed `You Want It Back') over an hour later. There are some lull's, but never a moment when you are not being taken ... Read More:

I bought this album for a couple of reasons - firstly, the incredibly etherial-sound that is 'Sandpaper Kisses', which I discovered though the equally esoteric xbox game 'Fahrenheit'. Secondly, the Mercury music award nomination and other glowing reviews.
However, for me this album is all shades of grey - apart from the track that I bought it for and one other, which is a real let-down. I was expecting more of the same - that hypnotic voice mixed with a variation of new sounds, but what is commonly revered as 'That Voice' becomes a mediocre and broadly monotonous sound in a selection of tracks that seem to meandre through repetitive and down-beat tunes and rhythms; not the rich and varied combination that I was ... It's 2006 yet this CD is as current as if its release date were yesterday. Stephane Pompougnac is, in a word, a gifted master of chillout mix. All Hotel Costes discs are first class but the tunes chosen stike me as the crème de la crème particularly Track 11, "PNC aux Portes", which, --if you've ever been to an afterparty-- you know and love.
I know, I know, you would prefer if this were posted at Amazon USA, but I often buy from Amazon UK or FR because discs for European release generally include more tracks. Lucky you!

As with all music its a very strong matter of personal taste, if you like massive attack you won't neccesarily enjoy this. I love it, but it took me a year before I actually enjoyed it and now is one of my most played album. Great for zoning out and getting lost...
Be forewarned: Matmos has embraced synth, and every burp, blip and wave that comes with it.
In fact, their latest album "Supreme Balloon" is inflated to maximum with endless quantities of synth, and they seem pretty determined to use every last shred. And while not as endearing as their more organic past work, it does sound like a maddened musician was let loose in a room full of computers -- wonky, silly and lightheartedly spacey.
It opens with a weird fluttery noise... which turns out to be a beat that runs throughout "Rainbow Flag." No real vocals here -- just a weird frolicksome beat that sounds like a video game in the middle of an acid trip. About two-thirds of the way through, some little trippy fairy voices join in the ... This is a strange album, and as a result of that strangeness I'm not entirely sure if it will still appeal to new listeners, or whether it really is just a throwback to the end of the late 90's alternative scene. It's certainly no way to follow up a huge, successful, double-album like Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness, with the band rejecting straight rock in favour of extended compositions drawing heavily on languid pianos, anachronistic 80's style synthesisers and lyrics that are shot through with a sense of bitterness and defeat. Listening to it today, for the first time in years, I was surprised at how highly a younger incarnation of myself must have rated this; especially given that it is (or was at the time) one of the priciest 'strange' albums ... As a German living in the Middle East - Gulf region: Oman, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Quatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, ... - I truly do appreciate the music from that area. The rhythm is always mystical and very highly personal. You can feel the instruments and the musical tones which the artist wants you to feel. The musician wants to take you on a trip. They want to take you to a world unlike any other. And in this album, the very popular female singer NATASAHA ATLAS manages to do just that.
A Portrait: NATACHA ATLAS
Natacha Atlas (born March 20, 1964) is a Belgian singer known for her fusion of Arabic and North African music with Western electronic music. She once termed her music "cha'abi moderne". Her music has been influenced by many styles ... Read More:

Why is David Holmes so relativly unknown, even after producing work of this jaw dropping quality, when his emulators, such as Fat Boy Slim get so huge? This album just makes old Norm seem so...crass. Subtle, delicate, groovy and oh-so-cool, this album is a film, it's a huge hollywood blocbuster without pictures. It feels not like a collection of seperate tracks, but a continual narrative. An album in the truest sense of the word. I came across Holmes by accident and now just want everything he's ever done. Buy this buy this buy this buy this.
